The original tree that Abundant Aerial was selected from looks almost like a hairy animal, every branch in the small trees canopy is covered in fine aerial roots. The branches are all thin and delicate and seem to break a little easier than regular PJF which are somewhat brittle when pushed too far. A little extra caution when wiring is recommended, but it is not overly brittle, it is still considered workable.
Species PJF general information
This is probably the best if not the best Australian native Fig for Bonsai, I believe it even rivals the Tiger Bark Fig from tropical Asia as being endemic it suits our Sydney climate even better and thrives as a Bonsai. Very tough, adaptable to a wide range of conditions, endemic to most parts of Sydney, tolerates periods of wet, dry, full sun and shade. Thrives with adequate water, excellent drainage, moderate fertiliser and full sun. Can be grown into a huge Bonsai Tree or kept/reduced down to a very tiny baby palm size. Can be grown as a super thick trunk specimen resembling a Baobab or an elegant elongated twisty fine tree. There are few bonsai styles that don’t suit this species perfectly, most styles should be attempted. Several cultivars are occasionally available from The Bonsai Guy from time to time, including but not limited to Noel Summerall’s Little Ruby, Farm Cove Curly Leaf and others under development include, Narrow Leaf Form, Round Leaf Form, Bright Red Leaf Sheath, Abundant Aerial, two different Variegated forms, Ficus rubiginosa forma glabrescens and several others yet to receive a name, along with constantly seeking and identifying newly discovered and interesting forms and cultivars.
