In 2016, McGregor Coxall was engaged by Infrastructure NSW - to investigate the Rozelle Interchange, a critical node within the $16.8 billion WestConnex roads program. Originally conceived as an above-ground cloverleaf of elevated roads that would have permanently entrenched the disconnection between surrounding communities, McGregor Coxall instead reframed the masterplan as a rare opportunity to rethink the role of major transport infrastructure and improve Sydney’s western gateway.

Now 10 years later, the green infrastructure masterplan has successfully transformed the Rozelle Interchange into a vibrant green heart for the Inner West. By reimagining the space above the road network we set about advocating to move the entire interchange underground. The public surface was eventually liberated for nearly 10 hectares of new public parkland above the motorway interchange. This visionary shift delivered broad community outcomes and ecological regeneration without compromising the project’s complex engineering requirements and budget.

The resulting Rozelle Parklands are now complete, featuring over 3,000 trees, 170,000 plants, and new wetlands that support local recreation and biodiversity. The site serves as a vital regional connector, providing 14 kilometres of active transport links that seamlessly bridge the gap from Drummoyne to the Sydney CBD. A decade on, the parklands stand as a city-changing precedent for how infrastructure can be leveraged to create a high-performance, sustainable public legacy.

A large team headed by the and Joint Venture delivered the developed vision:

Adrian McGregor’s Biourbanism Book argues that cities are nature. The resilience model for creating sustainable cities outlined in his award-winning book has been featured in the Agenda Journal of the QLD/NT Planning Profession.

"The world’s 10,000+ cities now emit more than 75% of all global greenhouse gas emissions, making them hotspots for environmental degradation and vulnerability to climate-related disasters," he says.

"With over 70% of the world’s population living in urban areas, cities are both the cause and solution to the climate crisis.

"Biourbanism proposes a paradigm shift in urban design thinking, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various systems within cities."

How does language shape our experience of landscape?

McGregor Coxall worked with Jump Spark Ltd to design a visual installation for a bilingual audio project with Eryri National Park and Sherman Theatre Cardiff, exploring the themes of language, landscape, nature, and place, and exposing the connection between language loss and climate loss.

Led by Sophie Thomas, McGregor Coxall Narrative Designer, the immersive installation intertwined visual metaphor and dramaturgically led experience, featuring paper flowers adorned with printed text, a miniature world inside a dollhouse, and a communal tree where visitors could share and adopt nature words. Audience contribution was invited to enrich the design.
