invites you to explore Overleaf House designed by Bijl Architecture on Sunday 1st March.

Located in the Willoughby East heritage conservation area, the design has transformed the original 10year old cottage while retaining its most valuable features. Entry and circulation are completely reconsidered, providing the opportunity for new proportions and spatial arrangements within the building enveloped afforded by the strict planning controls.
The renewed landscape is a significant in the reimagining of the house, designed and executed by the client, a horticulturalist by training.
Overleaf House ably demonstrates that a low carbon approach to building – retaining/reusing existing building fabric, putting passive design and mindful building size to the fore, specifying materials with a low life cycle cost, installing energy efficient systems, and embracing ‘loose fit’ design principles, can readily produce a flexible, expressive and heritage friendly design response.

ABOUT BIJL ARCHITECTURE
was established in 2012 by architect (and Associate Professor) Melonie Bayl-Smith and is the recipient of numerous architecture and construction industry awards.
The practice has worked on a variety of projects including work across residential, interiors, commercial and public sectors, with a focus on a collaborative approach to each project working closely with clients, consultants and builders.
The practice’s design philosophy identifies that inherent flexibility and intentional longevity are key to creating sustainable architecture, from the viewpoints of aesthetics, functionality, economy, and the total environment.

This Castlecrag residence overlooks Sydney’s Middle Harbour and shelters a private garden and Koi-pond from the Southerly winds. The living space is pavilion-like, opening to both sides.
On one side, it opens to the podium with views beyond, on the other, the private garden and Koi-pond. The glass & steel upper level is devoted entirely to the master suite, providing absolute privacy while overlooking Sydney’s waterways.
The structure is simple, the materials are calm, as nature and the view fill the room.

At the AAA we are dedicated to making architecture accessible to the public and being able to educate and inspire people to discover why design matters.
The Australian Architecture Association (AAA) is a not-for-profit cultural organisation whose mission is to educate and increase public awareness in architecture and is a gateway for the community and visitors to explore the city with a trained volunteer guide sharing their knowledge and the stories behind our amazing buildings.

AAA raises over 80% of its’ revenue every year, so the generosity of supporters and donors is crucial to AAA.
Your generosity helps “Keep Architecture Open” to the public, so please support AAA by donating, big or small, every donation matters.
In appreciation of your support, we are offering wonderful Rewards in the ‘Keep Architecture Open’ Annual Fundraising Appeal.

Testimonial from architect Simon Anderson:
“The AAA series has a substantial impact on the architecture industry and fosters meaningful conversations between fellow architects, potential clients, and the greater public. This insight into the design process is engaging and invaluable to those in attendance, as the immersive experience highlights the design process, revealing the creativity and craftsmanship behind each project”.

Every dollar you donate will make a difference and your gift will go towards delivering AAA’s educational program of activities.

At Home with David Langston-Jones // This Sunday 19th Oct, we’ll be opening a townhouse in Redfern by architect .langston_jones. While Australia has the dubious honour of building the largest homes on the planet, David has always been interested in doing more with less.

On an awkward site of just 155 sq m, this inner-city project presents two tiny, terraced houses on a footprint little bigger than a pair of double garages. Every square centimetre, inside and out, has been considered in exacting detail for its functional and aesthetic impact on both the occupants and surrounding neighbourhood.
The pair of buildings are articulate and expressive toward the street while exhibiting a spaciousness that belie their size. Despite being close to neighbours and with carefully arranged openings framing views onto Japanese Zen Gardens which borrow from distant trees and the sky, these homes are private yet transparent.

The zen garden was designed by Shunmyo Masuno, considered Japan’s leading garden designer.

ABOUT DAVID LANGSTON-JONES
David Langston-Jones is an architect based in Alexandria who predominately undertakes modest small-scale residential projects. He studied architecture in the UK at the Canterbury College of Art, and Royal College of Art in London. After graduating he began his architectural career in the office of the famous UK Architect Sir Norman Foster.
David arrived in Australia and briefly worked for the Australian firm Denton Corker Marshall, before beginning his own practice here in 1999. He is interested in experimenting with how we might live in a shrinking world where population explosion demands ever-more resourcefulness.
David’s work has been published both in Australia and overseas. He is also an active in the education of the next generation of designers through work as a tutor and critic at University of Sydney, University of NSW and University of Technology Sydney.

At Home with Anderson Architecture // Join us in September, we will be visiting and opening two very sustainable residences in the Blue Mountains by

Govetts Leap Bach, Blackheath
A small house project for a New Zealand couple built to Flame Zone construction, the latest in a string of bushfire resistant design homes and a benchmark in bushfire resistant design. Govetts Leap Bach has also been designed and constructed using Passivhaus principles to greatly reduce energy demand and provide a healthy indoor environment. These two methodologies go hand in hand, meaning in the event of a bushfire the home should be smoke free, due to its airtight construction and a ventilation system able to filter out bushfire smoke.

Off Grid House, Megalong Valley
Nestled in the bushland, Off Grid House is a premium benchmark for sustainable living under what can be extreme conditions while coexisting with nature. Boasting an 8.2 star rating, a holistic approach is ensured from start to finish of procurement and beyond into post occupancy. The modest, highly durable dwelling is net zero emissions in a BAL-40 / BAL-FZ setting; self-sufficient in terms of power, water and sewage.
The distinctive architectural form unifies two skillion roofs of opposing slopes to optimise solar energy generation over the living area, as well as passive heating and cooling to the bedrooms, bolstered by high levels of insulation and air tightness, an HRV, external shading and double glazing.
The design enables a deep connection to nature at differing scales.

About Anderson Architecture
was established in 2002, and specialises in the design and realisation of sustainable, high quality residential projects with a team of experienced architects who manage their projects from design to construction.
