One from our archives:
This villa on the Balmain peninsula overlooking Johnston’s Bay was originally constructed for Robert Blake in 1854–1855 as "Blake Vale", as a simple single-storied colonial house. In 1860 then owner Major Ewen Wallace Cameron engaged architect James McDonald to add an elaborate entrance portico and stone upper storey with slate roof, with bayed and pedimented windows providing panoramic views of the city of Sydney. A three-storey wing and basement were added by the same architect in 1872. Cameron renamed the house “Ewenton”.
By the1950s the house was in use as a store and was damaged by fire in 1980. Under an agreement relating to the development of the surrounding land, the Lend Lease Corporation and Clive Lucas of this firm restored the exterior in the 1980s based on the 1880s photograph.
Ewenton was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

LSJ are pleased to share that a group of cottages at Nos. 78-88 Parraween Street, Cremorne have been listed as local heritage items in the North Sydney LEP 2013, based on our assessment and recommendations, and due to tremendous community support to preserve the cottages along Parraween Street.

Of the group, Nos. 82-88 were built by noted local builders and developers the Harbutt Brothers. Percy and Helier Harbutt were involved in developing land around Mosman, Cremorne and Neutral Bay, while another brother, Lawrence was a real estate agent. Both businesses operated from Harbutt’s Building on the corner of Military Road, Macpherson and Parraween Streets, Cremorne (demolished). Helier Harbutt was also one of the founding directors of The Northern Suburbs Brick Co. Ltd (later renamed the Northern Suburbs Co-Operative Brick Co. Ltd.).

The Harbutt Brothers took out the leasehold over Lots 1 to 7 and Lot 9 to part Lot 20 of Section 2 of the Parraween Estate in 1907 and over the next year developed a group of fourteen, free-standing, Federation style cottages, of which only five survive today. Collectively, the cottages illustrate the adaptation of the Federation style for modest housing as undertaken by the Harbutt Brothers.

A wonderful restoration and upgrading project recently completed at a Colonial style two storey verandahed house in the central west of NSW. Built in the mid-1800s initially as a single storey residence, it was extended in the late 1850s to its present two storey form and remains substantially intact with high quality cedar joinery and detailing throughout. Fibrous cement sheeting enclosures at the rear of the building have been removed revealing once again the complete form of the house with its wrap around verandahs. Internally, original joinery has been restored and the principal living spaces brought back to life and the kitchen and bathrooms modernised with sympathetic Victorian period details. Lucas Stapleton Johnson assisted with the restoration work and obtaining development consent. The works were undertaken by the current owners and internal details by Callander Constructions.

The Centennial Memorial, Centenary Square, Parramatta was erected in 1888 to commemorate the centenary of the colony of NSW.
The architect, Horace Hollamby, conceived it as “a composite Drinking Fountain and Clock (illuminated at night); the Fountain consists of four drinking situations for the general Public – similarly so four for horses, and eight for dogs.” By the time the contract drawings and specification were drawn up, the animal drinking situations had been omitted from the design.
LSJ oversaw major conservation works in 2014 including reinstatement of the lights and drinking fountains. We managed to insert bubblers into the drinking basins to bring them into public use. In 2024, we completed further conservation works including sandstone cleaning, desalination and repair, new lead weatherings on pediments, repair and renovation of clocks,
We have been involved in the conservation of this monument since 1994.
