It's with delight to announce that 'Hillcrest House' has been shortlisted for the Australian Institute of Architects, 2025 NSW Architecture Awards for Sustainable Architecture.

Hillcrest House demonstrates the quiet art of suburban renewal in North Manly. Brent Yttrup Architecture's thoughtful intervention transforms a modest post-war home into a light-filled sanctuary where a majestic Angophora gum tree becomes both inspiration and organising principle, creating intimate connections between architecture and landscape.

The project embeds sustainability throughout its design and construction. Extensive use of locally sourced blackbutt timber creates significant carbon storage to offset the embodied energy of necessary structural steel.

The passive solar design minimises energy requirements with precisely calculated eaves that admit winter sun while excluding summer heat. Cross-ventilation pathways reduce reliance on artificial cooling, taking advantage of cooling breezes.

The house operates with a positive annual input into the grid through solar and batteries. Vital solar passive elements such as eaves and sunshades aren't simply removed for aesthetic reasons but are instead sleek, cohesively integrated components of the design.

Experimenting with epoxy embedment of steel balusters into timber and using o-rings to keep the resin where it needs to be, and also centre the rods. Drilling the holes and testing fitting went well… epoxy pumping starts 7am 😬
