Astor, and so it becomes a Dance

Joinery elements are integrated into existing openings imbuing
these spaces with additional function. The extent and proportion of joinery is carefully considered to reframe rooms, maintaining a calm backdrop that celebrates the period details.

Restored historic elements are framed and celebrated,
breathing new life into the key features of the home.

Astor, and so it becomes a Dance

Throughout the apartment warm white and neutrals are punctuated with key moments of colour, creating a sense of difference and generosity throughout the spaces, without feeling overbearing. Colour is also used as a framing device to enhance existing period features, the deep tones of the marble fireplace in the living area are anchored and complemented by the inserted green cabinets adjacent.

It’s the last week to catch our ‘Chairs for Children’ on display in the Inside Outside Sculpture plinth.

📍Located in Ted Mack Civic Park, North Sydney

On display until Sunday 24th May

Can be viewed 24/7, illuminated at night.

What started as a fun idea about a way to make Mari’s Autoprogettazione work more accessible, has grown into an exploration of making at a different scale.

It’s been a great opportunity to share this work in the community.

As always, instructions for the chairs assembly are available on our website, link in bio.

Thanks to for the support.

‘Chairs for Children’ in

These Chairs for Children have been featured in a great article in Never Too Small Issue 6.

It’s surreal seeing our work in print alongside Enzo Mari and the work of fantastic contemporary designers and craftspeople. A testament to the ongoing legacy and influence of Mari’s work.

We’re delighted to announce that ‘Replica Autoprogettazione’ has been shortlisted in the 2026 Australian Interior Design Awards – Installation Design Category

An exhibition that coincided with the launch of our Studio, this project remains dear to us.

The exhibition was an opportunity for our studio to create something exploring the intersection of many design issues we see in practice today, tensions between the standardised and the bespoke, the future of craft and DIY practices, authorship and meaningful user engagement.

It travelled to Melbourne Design Week 2025, almost a year ago now, and was re-invented for display alongside original furniture pieces the exhibition objects were based on, generously hosted in the showroom.

We’re thrilled to have our project ‘Astor, and so it becomes a dance’ shortlisted in the 2026 Australian Interior Design Awards – Residential Design Category

As our second completed interiors project, this recognition is significant for us.

Astor presented an opportunity to build less and restore more, retaining the charm and integrity of the heritage apartment balanced with improving the layout and everyday functionality.

The design was informed by gestures present in the existing architecture, colour used sparingly but deliberately with a material palette drawn from tones of the original leadlight windows.

Thank you to all those involved in the project. A special thanks to our wonderful clients Peter and Christine. It’s an honour to be shortlisted alongside so many prolific designers.

Feeling unsure at the start of a project is normal.
It doesn’t mean you’re unprepared, it means you’re paying attention.

Design works best when it allows space for thinking, testing and refinement along the way.

Renovation is rarely a single moment.
It’s an ongoing relationship with a place, shaped by time, habits, and change.

We’re interested in homes that age well, adapt quietly, and continue to support the people who live in them long after the builders leave.

Material in focus: Terrazzo

Traditional cement-based terrazzo exists throughout our Rockfort project, which led to our choice of tile for the bathroom.

This traditional form of terrazzo, poured as a slab and formed insitu, is present throughout the halls of the 1920s apartment building. It can be seen in a range of different colours with brass inlayed details, a richly crafted texture.

During the bathroom demolition we uncovered original black and white poured terrazzo floors under layers of tiles, which was unfortunately not salvageable.

To weave in the building’s history we opted for a contemporary take on terrazzo, a porcelain based terrazzo tile for the floors and vanity top. This is a contemporary full bodied porcelain terrazzo tile, made with reference to traditional processes, not the printed on kind. The porcelain chips are woven through the mix, each tile is unique.

We wanted to expose the edge of this along the vanity, a small moment which reveals all as to how this tile is made.

And that original terrazzo from the demolition? We have plans for its reuse – stay tuned.
