Meet Jordan, our new Apprentice at IndigiGrow!
Jordan is continuing his apprenticeship journey with us, joining the team as a 2nd Year Apprentice.
''I’ve been at IndigiGrow for just over 2 months now and I feel right at home. I love the work that we do. I’m very passionate about it as we are keeping our native flora and culture alive.
I’ve been lucky enough to be taught about my family tree growing up as well as about culture and cultural practices. Culture is important to me as it gives me my identity, purpose and a reason to get up every day. It's a way of life.
I’m a La Pa boy through my mum and always grew up knowing of my Bidiagal heritage. I learnt about some of the plants growing up, but not as much as I know now I’ve been working here. I admire the plants because they have a purpose, whether for use by animals, for medicine, or to make air. Also, technological purposes through toolmaking. I come from a family of famous toolmakers -the Simms family.
I love sharing my culture. Especially with corporate groups who volunteer with us. I love their reaction to what we teach them. Today, people are so disconnected from the outdoors.
It's so good to be able to propagate plants that are going to go back on country. But also knowing that the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Community is at 3% and knowing our Sydney plants are endangered makes me passionate about coming to work. If we lose our plants, we lose a part of our identity.
I love working with the plants because they are a part of us. When their roots are in the ground and we walk on the earth we connect to those plants on a cultural and spiritual level. My dad taught me about getting out on country to ground yourself. I love it. I leave my phone at home and just live in the moment whilst on country.''
