Thanks to Ingrid Pearson LFRAIA and the Architects OutWest Learning Group for the opportunity to present our work on promotion of Circular Economy strategies on our case study project in North Arm Cove, NSW.

On Thursday 18 April our speaker will be Dejan Simovic. Dejan has a Masters in Architecture and Planning from Belgrade University, Serbia. He is also a certified Passive House Designer and Circular Economy Advisor. Dejan has over 30 years of international experience and more than 20 years local Australian experience in research, planning, design and development management on various projects, from individual houses, subdivision plans, and master planned developments, to large residential towers in Sydney CBD. He started DESIM with his partner Tatjana, as their own architectural and planning practice five years ago and is specializing in sustainable and high-performance design, planning, and research.

At Green Drinks, Dejan will be presenting his innovative approach to developing sustainable urban precincts which has its foundations in the work of Walter Burley Griffin, and uses the concept of the Circular Economy. The Circular Economy approach is all about design:
- designing out waste;
- designing flexible places/buildings so that they can accommodate multiple uses through their lifetime;
- designing regenerative places and regenerating natural habitats where possible.

Dejan will explain his design ideas by showcasing one of the two case studies he is currently developing at North Arm Cove (Port Stephens).

After four years of promoting with local and international bodies the opportunities that exist in North Arm Cove paper subdivision planned and subdivided by Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffin, we have achieved, in colllaboration with local community, that DoP has directed the local council to rezone this land to C4-Environmental Living.

Objective of C4 zoning is:

- To provide for low-impact residential development in areas with special ecological, scientific or aesthetic values.

- To ensure that residential development does not have an adverse effect on those values

Minimum lot size is reduced to 5ha in absence of detailed Development Plan that would address various issues, including provision of infrastructure.

Development Plan is the next task for our team.

Since 2020, our team is actively participating in providing support through Architects Assist initiative to the community of North Arm Cove (NAC) that we have become part of.

"We aim to enable those affected by the present and future disasters to rebuild their lives, either by themselves or with help from the community, at once or in stages."
"Architects Assist is an initiative of over 600 built environment professionals working pro bono or for reduced fees to help and support those affected by natural disasters and other adverse circumstances. "

We have contributed in getting this community on the map, rising awareness of its problems and potentials. We hope that with that, we could further help reduce future disasters or limit its effects.
