High‑resolution subsurface intelligence for confident groundwater decisions.
Legion Drilling’s Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) delivers continuous, real‑time data that exposes the true hydraulic behaviour of the subsurface - even when traditional sampling may suggests uniform homogenous conditions. With vertical resolution down to 1.5–3 cm, the HPT pinpoints thin permeable layers, perched groundwater, and subtle stratigraphic changes, not visible with the eye but have significant effect on groundwater flow.

Project Spotlight: – Pumped Hydro Energy Storage

Our team is supporting specialist drilling services delivered in one of the most remote and logistically challenging regions in NSW.

Our scope includes operating a dedicated drill rig in terrain that demands detailed planning, precision ex*****on, and strong field capability.

Throughout the project, our crew has successfully managed a range of complex site conditions, including:
• Remote operations with extremely difficult access
• River crossings prone to rapid flooding
• Remote accomodation
• Helicopter transport for crew movements, fuel, and consumables
• Bulldozer access to establish and maintain safe access tracks

Our crew is experienced and excited to take on difficult projects.

We’ve partnered with our client to safely complete drilling on a 16‑year‑old liner, using layered protection to prevent damage. Our crew has delivered careful, precise work to get the results needed while maintaining the integrity of the liner throughout the program.

SPT testing on the MC900P features a 63.5-kg hammer with 150 mm increments, providing real-time ground truth data.

🔍 What’s the Standard SPT Hammer Weight?
(ASTM D1586 Explained)

In-field experience shows that hammer weight is crucial.

According to ASTM standards, the required weight for an SPT hammer is:
👉 140 ± 2 lbf (623 ± 9 N)
👉 Approximately 63.5 kg

This classic metallic “donut” or safety hammer drives the split-barrel sampler from a height of about 30 inches (0.76 m).

Why does this matter?
The standard ensures consistent results and reliable soil behavior interpretation across various projects. Different systems may deliver varying energy levels, but one thing remains constant – the hammer must always weigh in at that specified range.

Delineating Preferential Pathways with HPT
On this project, we’re using the Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) to build a high‑resolution picture of subsurface conditions and identify the preferential pathways that control groundwater flow. This level of detail is essential for understanding how PFAS moves across large, complex sites.

By logging injection pressure and electrical conductivity in real time, HPT helps us pinpoint permeable zones, confining layers, and the flow paths contaminants are most likely to follow. The result is clearer conceptual site models, more targeted sampling, and smarter remediation planning.

High‑density data that drives confident decisions.

The Legion Drilling Australia crew is on site at Mount Oxide, collaborating with the Terra Search team on the Regeneration exploration program.

Frank, our project geologist, shared insights into the latest core samples - meticulously logged and bagged every meter to track changes in lithology and mineralization.

We've spotted strong copper indicators, including visible malachite. These samples are off to the lab for thorough analysis.

This teamwork showcases how effective fieldwork and quality sampling boost confidence in our geological model and shape future exploration strategies.

On‑Site in the NT | Direct Sensing Operations
Our team is currently working at a tailings storage facility, completing in‑situ testing to characterise subsurface conditions.
We’ve commenced with CPTu testing to classify soil behaviour and define target layers.
Next, our piston sampling system will recover high‑quality, minimally disturbed samples for detailed lab analysis.

A quick behind-the-scenes moment at Mt Oxide.
The Sonic rig had low l**e pressure and lost rotation, but the team tackled it step by step. They found a faulty sensor, sourced a replacement from Brisbane, and got back to drilling the same day.
This response showcases Legion's experience, practical teamwork, and strong communication.
This approach keeps projects moving!

Lou, our Direct Sensing Technician at Legion Drilling, deployed the Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) to analyze subsurface permeability for an environmental client.

The tool captures live flow and pressure data as it probes down to 6 m, crucial for identifying groundwater pathways amid contamination concerns. HPT offers real-time insights that support accurate site models across various sectors. 🌍
