Energy supply authorities use a frequency injection into the NSW network to turn on appliances such as hot water systems when they need to shed load. Unfortunately dimmers don't like this frequency resulting in flashing lights...rather annoying if you ask me.

The solution is to use a ripple filter as seen in the below picture to filter out the injection frequency.
