Wonder how future-proof they are…
Hope these units don’t let occupants overheat and have low operational costs 🤔

The old pattern books were about mass production of a wide variety of buildings. The history of their development is interesting. Not unlike the options of purchasing a home off the plan or from a project home builder - all for vacant sites starting in the 1700’s.

Along with the plans, elevations, section or two and some details these buildings were ‘marketed’ around the globe. Here in AU we have as a result the Californian bungalow and Victorian terrace just as example.

When it comes the missing middle we ought to be future proofing any construction against an increase in global temperature, where occupants are comfortable for longer without being a pain point to the pocket and health.

Then there is are existing buildings that have good bones that should be considered worthy of a facelift and upgrade for the same reasons and more. For example reducing the carbon impacts of demolition and building new. Retrofitting could begin now, with agreement of various parties a ‘pattern’ to retrofit these could be done now with immediate positive impacts.

These positive could range from longer tenancies, lower operational costs for heating and cooling. This enables money to go toward food and other important items of everyday living. Improved health outcomes for some, particularly if filtered air can be of benefit with respiratory issues (ie hay fever and allergies).

The knowledge is out there to be able to make change, with collaboration and effort things can change to be reducing our carbon footprint in construction and consumption, improving living standards to future proof our buildings too. Various pattern books that look deeper than the plans and elevations for the new would be useful too.

What are your thoughts?

👷🏻‍♀️ Had the opportunity to visit a couple of building sites yesterday with Mat from Zanneto Builders, it was great day for it.

We were discussing how there was a tight time frame to protect the timbers from the rain that was predicted for later today, and a first in AU application for the Pro Clima Solitex Extasana Adhero®.

It was great to hear about and see their approach to achieving airtightness, and minimize thermal bridging impacts, crucial aspects of achieving a certified passivhaus.

What stood out was how they’ve planned ahead for the next stage of the build, especially when it comes to membrane joints, planning and application matters!

It’s great to see forward-thinking approaches in action, Kyle Zanetto.

A top location with incredible views at Blackmans Beach, with project by the Maxa Design team.
