Today is the first day of Winter, and it is definitely not too late to keep building on your garden. Now is the time to:
๐ฅฌ Vegetables & Herbs
Sydney & Coast (Mild Winters): Direct-sow kale, broad beans, turnips, parsnips, and radishes. Transplant seedlings of broccoli, lettuce, and cabbage.
Cooler Inland/Southern NSW: Focus on long-maturing, frost-tolerant crops. Plant garlic, onions, cabbage, and peas.
Northern/Subtropical NSW: Warmer days mean you can plant a wider range of veggies. Sow Asian greens (bok choy), celery, rocket, and try planting sweet potatoes.
All-Year Staples: Herbs like coriander, chamomile, and spring onions.
๐ณ Fruit Trees & Roses
Deciduous Fruit & Nut Trees: Bare-root fruit trees (like apples, pears, peaches, and plums).
Citrus: It's a great time to pop new citrus trees in the ground. Fertilise established lemon trees to ensure they have the energy to fight off scale.
Roses: Late June is when bare-root roses become widely available. Prepare your planting holes with a slight mound in the center to spread the roots.
๐บ Flowers
Winter Annuals: Plant seedlings of pansies, snapdragons, cyclamens, alyssum, and stock.
Native Shrubs: It is a perfect time to plant Australian natives like banksias, grevilleas, and kangaroo paw. Winter rains help their roots establish before spring.
๐ ๏ธ Key June Gardening Jobs
Pruning: Prune dead or dying foliage from trees and shrubs. Hydrangeas can also be pruned now.
Mulch: Add a layer of mulch around garden beds.
