🚿 Waterproofing Rules Are Tightening in NSW (2026)

If you’re renovating a bathroom or balcony — this matters.

⚠️ Why the change?
Too many building defects = stricter rules across the board.

✅ What’s changing:

🔹 Higher compliance standards
All waterproofing must meet strict Australian Standards
• Internal areas → AS 3740
• External areas (balconies) → AS 4654

🔹 More documentation
Proper records, sign-offs, and compliance evidence are now expected

🔹 Greater accountability
Licensed trades + clearer responsibility for defects

❗ Important to know:
There’s a lot of talk about a “mandatory waterproofing certificate for every job” — that’s NOT strictly true for all projects.

Requirements depend on:
• Type of build (house vs strata)
• Size/value of the job
• Whether it falls under regulated building work

💡 What this means for you:
✔️ Don’t cut corners on waterproofing
✔️ Use a licensed contractor
✔️ Ask for documentation (even if not mandatory)
✔️ Extra important for strata + units

🛠️ Bottom line:
Waterproofing is no longer something you “just do” — it’s now a highly scrutinised trade with serious compliance expectations.

If you’re planning a reno and want it done properly the first time, make sure your builder is across the 2026 standards.
