SOME PLANTS OUTLIVE THEIR PEOPLE🌵
This Euphorbia platyclada has been part of CACTUS VISION for more than seven years. Long before us, it spent several decades growing in Sydney’s Botany area under the care of our late friend, Kurt Schremmer of Banksmeadow, NSW.
Kurt grew and collected cacti from his home in Banksmeadow. He was a friend, a teacher to Carl and Erin in all things cactus, an author, a keen gardener and a man fond of his home brew, his vegetable patch and, of course, his extraordinary collection of plants.
In 1991, Kurt published A Glossary of the Names and Terms Used in Connection with Succulent Plants, published in Kensington, NSW. A little piece of Australian cactus history that feels even more special to us now.
Kurt was deeply loved by his neighbours, and we were lucky enough to know him, learn from him and eventually become custodians of some of the plants he had cared for over many decades.
These plants have never felt like objects to us.
They have histories.
Previous owners.
Previous gardens.
Decades of growth.
People who watered them, moved them, propagated them, worried about them and loved them.
This strange Madagascan species, with flattened grey-brown stems resembling dried coral or driftwood, carried a tiny piece of Kurt’s garden with it all these years.
So this post is for the Dead Euphorbia, but mostly, it’s for Kurt.
Thanks for the plants, the knowledge and the stories. We’re still growing them. 🤍

A wonderfully unusual, semi-deciduous Euphorbia grown as much for its sculptural form as anything else.
