Recently completed Reed Bed Bay...
A reed bed is essentially a basin that is lined with an impermeable membrane, filled with gravel and planted with macrophytes such as reeds and rushes. Wastewater passes through the root zone of the reeds where it undergoes treatment via physical, chemical and biological interactions between the wastewater, plants, micro-organisms, gravel and atmosphere. Inlet and outlet pipes are positioned below the gravel surface, so that the water always remains below the surface, thus minimising the risk of human exposure to the wastewater, mosquito breeding and unpleasant odours.

Modern flat roofs tend to use a continuous membrane covering, which can better resist pools of standing water. These membranes are applied as a continuous sheet where possible, though sealants and heat welding is available to allow for bonding multiple sheets and dealing with structures penetrating the roof surface and forms a homogenous layer impervious to moisture.
