Healthy soils are the base of every productive grazing paddock. When soils are in good condition they hold more moisture, support stronger pastures and bounce back faster after dry periods. Simple grazing practices can make a big difference to how much organic matter and carbon the soil can store.

Good solid perennials are especially important. When paddocks are given enough rest, these grasses can rebuild their roots and drop more organic matter into the soil. Even the layer of leaf litter on the surface protects the soil, keeps it cooler and helps rainfall soak in rather than run off.

Many landholders are finding that small changes, such as planned rest periods or introducing more perennial species, gradually build healthier soils and more reliable pastures.

The Growing Climate Smart Grazing program can support landholders who want to strengthen their soil, improve pasture recovery and manage stocking rates in a way that benefits both the land and the business.

River conditions in Southern Queensland can change quickly due to local rainfall, upstream flows and broader catchment events.

The Fish Friendly Water Extraction Project, funded by the Australian Government, has installed 12 fish friendly screens on water extraction pumps across the Condamine, Balonne and Border Rivers catchments.

Screens help reduce debris entering pumps and protect native fish by preventing entrainment. These installations are part of a trial to test the technology in local river conditions.

Applying practical engineering know-how and local experience in real river conditions is enabling learning about screen technology.

Across Southern Queensland, in the Condamine, Balonne and Border River Catchments, the Fish Friendly Water Extraction Project has installed 12 fish friendly screens at working pump sites to trial the technology in real river conditions.

Funded by the Australian Government, installations involve collaboration with landholders and pump specialists to ensure the screen set-up suits the specific operating conditions of the site.

By focusing on practical design and local knowledge, the project is providing insights into the potential contribution of screens to help protect native fish.

ON-GROUND WORKS IN ACTION ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‚

The Southern Queensland Landscapes have been out and about this month, checking in on on-ground works taking shape for the Climate Smart Grazing Project across the Condamine River Basin.

This project supports graziers, landcare groups and first nations partners to deliver practical solutions to improved ground cover and increased soil carbon across the Condamine River Basin.

Here we can see 2km of hardwood and 4 barb fencing that helps to facilitate rotational grazing at the property. Our Southern Queensland Landscapes team were in the paddock conducting Land Condition Assessments to help the projects team monitor how this infrastructure helps to tackle bare ground on property and improve grazing practices across the Condamine River Basin.
This project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.

Southern Queensland Landscapes were proud to have the opportunity to present at and attend the Maranoa and South West Indigenous Business Expo in Roma this month.

Our Projects Officer, Jackson Shillingsworth, did a fantastic job of presenting on a range of projects with funding and partnership opportunities in the region including the successes of our Brigalow project which looked at reducing threats to the brigalow belt in southern Queensland, as well as the successes of the Wandhala drone project sharing how the initiative is supporting innovation and skills development across regional and cultural landscapes.

Thank you to all that stopped by to say hello!

Climate Smart Grazing Workshop with the Condamine Catchment Management Association ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‚

The Southern Queensland Landscapes team joined the CCMA for a workshop on funding opportunities for graziers in the area under the Climate Smart Grazing project, as well as a general discussion on carbon and environmental marketing opportunities and what those translate to in practical terms for landholders, led by our Knowledge Specialist Andrew Davidson.

Thank you to the CCMA for having us!

SQL ON THE ROAD ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿƒ Southern Queensland Landscapes have been out and about this month, meeting with community groups keen to hear more about the project funding opportunities offered by Southern Queensland Landscapes.

This month, Projects Lead, Claire Steains, and Knowledge Specialist, Andrew Davidson, met with Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group to talk about our Drought Resilience through Regional Peer Learning and Implementation Support project, funded from the Australian Governmentโ€™s Future Drought Fund. The catch-up also covered funding opportunities through the Climate Smart Grazing project in the Condamine River Basin. Both projects offer funding support to landholders in the area.

Andrew and Claire were thrilled to have the chance to check out the Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group's native plant nursery, located at their office within the TAFE on Dragon Street, Warwick QLD. The nursery is open to the public on Thursday mornings where the friendly and knowledgeable staff on site can assist with native plant selection for your property or garden ๐ŸŒฑ

Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group will be hosting an open day, during which the native plant nursery will be open, on Saturday 28th March from 9am - 12noon!
