Tom completed his apprenticeship with an old-school builder who has a very hands-on approach throughout every phase of a new build. As a result, in addition to learning the general skills and knowledge that one would expect an apprentice carpenter to learn, Tom had the opportunity to master the skills that many builders sub-contract out - concreting, plastering, tiling and framing. This experience shows in Tom’s workmanship.

Recently Tom did his first ever reno with herringbone tiles and we think he absolutely nailed it! Don’t worry though, Tom knows where his strengths lie and promises to bring in the subbies for the plumbing, electrical and painting!! 😉

Building runs in Tom’s family. In fact, his maternal grandfather and great-grandfather were both builders. His great-grandfather, Daniel Connolly, was a prominent builder in Warwick. He built many of the city’s pubs and shops, as well as the beautiful, heritage-listed St Mary’s Church. Daniel Connolly also served as a member of Warwick City Council for 25 years and held the office of mayor in 1910 and again from 1924-1932. He passionately advocated for a permanent water supply and in 1926 it was decided that the dam at Silverwood be renamed in his honour - Connolly Dam. He is credited for laying the bitumen in Grafton and Palmerin Streets for the first time, as well as the the palm tree-lined main street. In 1948, his obituary described the public works program that he oversaw as being “on a scale previously without parallel in the history of the municipality”. What a great way to spend the last day of the school holidays, showing Daniel’s great-great grandsons some of his projects and perhaps inspiring another generation of builders.
