Synthetic Grass ...
Do you have synthetic grass at your property or workplace?

Synthetic grass looks great and eliminates the need to keep an area mowed to keep tidy.
Synthetic grass does have a down side though. It can be very hot on kids feet.

We recently removed synthetic grass for one of our customers, and discovered it was rotten, with dead cockroaches and had live maggots ☹.

Have you heard about synthetic grass microplastic pollution?

Synthetic grass contributes to microplastic pollution through the breakdown of its plastic components, including the blades (made of polyethylene, polypropylene, or nylon) and the infill (often recycled tires). These microplastics are shed due to wear and tear, sun exposure, and weathering, and can be washed into soil, waterways, and oceans. Mitigation strategies like drainage filters can capture some of these particles, but substantial loss still occurs and can impact ecosystems and potentially human health.

If your synthetic grass area needs a makeover, we’d be happy to help.

Preparing your lawn for Summer
We are moving into preparing lawns ready for the summer. September is a great time to do this.
Consider scarifying to remove the buildup of lawn thatch to promote good lawn growth. Thatch is a buildup of organic material predominantly dead grass roots, shoots and runners.
After scarifying, we recommend mechanically coring your lawn. This is a process of removing cores or plugs of soil, grass and roots from the ground. This allows the roots to absorb more nutrients, allow for water, air, fertiliser and other organic material that your lawn needs to seep through deeper into the soil and root systems. This will promote deeper roots.
Top dress after coring to screed and level your lawn. This would be a mix of sand loam and manure, depending on the condition of your current soil. It helps create a level surface, controlling lawn thatch, improves soil structure and improves germination and growth if overseeding.
Fertilise your lawn in spring as your lawn breaks from winter dormancy is a great start to assist your lawn to jump into growth as the weather warms up.
To have your lawn looking great for this summer takes time and hard work. The Green Gardener still has some time to do this all for you. Give us a call now to arrange an appointment. Ph: 0427 395 778

Winter Pruning Your Roses

Hard pruning of your roses is best from end of July to early August. This helps promote strong spring growth and a second flush late in summer. Avoid pruning in the morning if it is still frosty. Not pruning your roses can result in poor blossoms, weird stems and generally an unpleasant appearance. It can also result in dehydration with dead and soggy, blackish canes.

Use clean and sharp secateurs to reduce the risk of disease being spread. Keep your rose garden a w**d and pest free environment.

Spraying some Lime Sulphur onto the plants controls fungi, bacteria and insects. Spray the entire rose including the ground to treat fungal spores in the ground. Never use Roundup (Glyphosate) near or on a windy day to stop drift. Glyphosate can cause leaf distortion and even death of your much loved roses.

Regularly remove old dead flower heads and diseased leaves to promote fresh new growth. All of this is essential in obtaining a beautiful, flourishing rose garden.
Different types of roses require different cuts, yet the same concept – about 45 degrees angle pointing outward. Weeping roses perform best when they’re left unpruned. If you feel like you need to provide some maintenance to weeping roses, stick to deadheading and just a light trim here and there when necessary.
