Our beginning...
REWIND TO FEB 2019 - 7 YEARS AGO
We purchased a run down old property that had soooo many bindis we never thought we'd get rid of them but here we are! The house needed a lot of work and we've poured a lot (blood, sweat, tears, money) into this place over the years but we have ZERO regrets. When we came to look at the place, it just felt like home. Honesty, it felt like it wrapped it's arms around us and gave us a warm hug! (Or took us captive, one or the other) π€£
We got engaged here, had our wedding here and now have two kiddos to call this home too. It feels like a lifetime ago but also feels like yesterday!
We had this sandhill (in the pic) out the back of our house, with peppercorn trees and dead orange trees. We managed to save 7 of the orange trees around the other side of the house and they are the most delicious oranges! Some locals have told us stories of their childhood memories coming to this property and digging tunnels in the sandhill and eating the best oranges in the district.
We had grand ideas for everything (but the budget didn't match π€£). We had no idea what to do with the sandhill, we even had the idea of turfing it all and hosting weddings here. Then covid hit and the world just changed. My hubby's nan (Nanny Bake) told us we should grow proteas. I've always loved proteas! Would buy them at a farmers market whenever I had the chance, I even had them in my wedding bouquet. But we had no idea how to grow proteas! NONE! We started doing some research, made our plant selections and in Autumn 2022, with the help of my inlaws - started planting. I was pregnant and quite sick at the time so very grateful for the help of family to get this job done.
2022 certainly came with it's challenges, our daughter got RSV and pneumonia at 2 weeks of age and found she had some liver issues too. My dad passed away and my hubby's nan (Nanny Bake) did too.
We had excellent rain fall which was fabulous for our plants to get established but it also put our property under threat for flooding! Thankfully we were safe! π
We certainly pay homage to Nanny Bake with every flower we grow π
