We had a little late night stroll through the greenhouse to check on our little green friends. Some of them look like they are getting into Frankie's dog food, because they are chunky!

Alocasia

Alocasia, specifically elephant ears/taro, are common house and garden plants in the tropics.
These plants are common due to their easy care and attractive, large folliage. They come in heaps of different sizes and colours, and can therefore fit in anywhere! Even inside if you prefer living in a jungle like we do.

We grow 5 different types (all shown in the picture).
🌱🌱 Most of the variations should be ready for sale in the near future. 🌱🌱

What we grow (from upper left of the picture): Alocasia plumbea (black metallic), xanthosoma aurea (lime zinger), alocasia macrorrhizos (giant taro), colocasia esculenta (edible taro), colocasia esculenta 'black magic' (black magic taro), xanthosoma aurea (lime zinger), alocasia macrorrhiza variegata (variegated elephant ear) and alocasia macrorrhizos (giant taro).

Black mettalic:
- dark green shiny leaves with silver-purple underneath
- can reach 2m
- arrow shaped leaves

Lime zinger:
- heart shaped leaves
- neon green leaves
- can reach 1.5m (in warm areas), but usually 1m

Giant taro:
- can reach 2.5m
- massive leaves

Edible taro:
- velvety leaves
- up to 2m
- can eat bulb of plant
- perfect in ponds as well

Black magic:
- black, velvety leaves
- up to 2m
- perfect in ponds

Variegated elephant ear:
- marbled leavss with light green and white blotches
- need bright light to grow (due to variegation)
- up to 2m

Trichocereus peruvianus 'sausage'
This cactus is a staple to the australian growers collection, originally discovered in South Australia as potentially a peruvianus/pachanoi hybrid. Generally a slow grower compared to other trichs, with a powdery blue hue and shorter spines compared to most peru. What makes this cacti stand out is it has a tendancy to stop growing from the tip (terminate) and start to grow a pup from the very top, overtime causing this subspecies to take on the look of a string of sausages, hence the sub species name 'sausage'. You may not know this but there are no native cacti from Australia and I believe this is what makes this cactus so unique, having an introduced cacti that has mutated into something beautiful that was produced from our own backyard!

Trichocereus pachanoi 'PC'
Known as the 'predominant cultivator' or 'predominant clone', the PC is one of the most common columnar cacti found. One of the most weather/bacteria/fungal tolerant cacti found and a fast grower at that! The PC is identifiable from other trich by having moderately jagged ribs, spines are generally short (.5cm - 1cm) and all similar length and facing upwards as with it's areoles. Being one of the more common and cheap columnar cacti, growers use this sub species as a very successful grafting stock, to help grow scions of other cacti types. One of my favourite cacti because it is so hardy in varying climates and is very forgiving for starting your cacti collection!

Feel free to let me know what you think of my cacti show and tell, as this is my first one on instagram! Hoping to post one each week. Thanks!
