I want to take a moment to share and talk about this post.
Being a face and body artist, I work with both makeup artistry and face painting, and while adults are very happy to sit and have their makeup done, sometimes for kids, the idea of getting their face painted can be really scary. I will never restrain a child nor will I force them to get their face painted, I am always happy to refund parents if the kids change their mind or offer them something else (whether that be a headband, clip in hair or a face mask). Getting your face painted should always be a positive and fun experience.
So what can you do if a kid is scared about it? Offer them options:
"Do you want to see what the brush feels like on your arm first? Ok, what about with a little bit of water?" This can help prepare them for that sensation of the brush tickling their skin. Face paints are water activated and while it should never hurt to have face paint, it can be quite a surprising sensation for little ones when they feel something cool against their skin. Allowing them to see what something is going to be like in a controlled manner can help build their confidence.
I can also offer them alternative locations. It might be scary to have someone paint your face and you can't see what is going on.
"Would you like me to do a design on your arm or leg instead?"
Other times, they may just want to observe someone else first. "Did you want to watch me paint someone else first?" Sometimes I may ask a parent or guardian to help out, "Hey, did you want to see the design on mum/dad first?"
Most times, if given the option and choice, kids will often happily get painted.
However, every child is different and they all have things that they are comfortable with and things they are unsure of. If after this, they still don't want to, that is ok! Face painting is designed to be a fun and enjoyable activity and if you are forcing children to do something they don't want to, it may not be enjoyable for them in the future.
Let them choose, offer them options, maybe today isn't the day they get their face painted, but we can still give them a fun mask instead :)
