Dragon Fire Plants A small backyard nursery selling a range of vegetables, flowers, herb seedlings, shrubs and trees.

I love chillies and at Dragon Fire Chilli I grow my own chillies from mild to Insanity. I then grind them vacuum pack and seal them for freshness and all of my chilli spice is made and produced in Australia and this is all done here locally in the Riverina, NSW. I grow up on all things chilli and love cooking with it, there is nothing betting then the heat from a chilli in your mouth. Also have a

This is one of my young conifer bonsai projects, which I believe is Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Leighton Green’ (Leyland Cypress). Unfortunately, I lost the plant tag, so I can’t be completely certain of the cultivar, but it closely matches the characteristics of this popular fast-growing cypress.

Cupressocyparis leylandii is an excellent species for bonsai and pre-bonsai development due to its vigorous growth, attractive foliage and ability to respond well to pruning and shaping. This tree has already begun its journey with some wiring to create movement and character in the trunk.

🌱 Growing Information & Care Tips
• Fast-growing evergreen conifer.
• Can tolerate temperatures as low as -22°C and as high as 38°C when established.
• Drought and frost tolerant once mature.
• Prefers a well-draining potting mix and regular watering during hot weather.
• Responds well to pruning, making it suitable for hedging, topiary and bonsai.
• In the Riverina, extreme summer heat can be challenging. I have lost several pines and cypress trees during severe heatwaves. When temperatures climb above 30°C, I recommend moving bonsai and young plants under heavy-grade shade cloth and ensuring they receive adequate moisture.

Bonsai is a long-term journey. Every season, trim and wire adjustment helps shape the future of the tree. 🌳

I've got a green thumb, especially when it comes to succulents - I've successfully grown hundreds and can't wait to transplant them once they've rooted. My TAFE training is paying off as I expand my horticultural skills, and my team a In4care is supporting me every step of the way at the nursery. As someone who relies on a disability pension, running this nursery is incredibly fulfilling, and this year I'm focusing on ramping up production with seed propagation and cuttings, while also sourcing new plants to add to my collection of over 1,000 specimens.

Please correct if I have the names wrong.
Crassula sp Baby bell
Pigface - Carpobrotus edulis I think
Aeonium arboreum
Cotyledon orbiculata - pigs ear
Echeveria elegans - Mexican snow ball
Graptosedum Francesco Baldi - Darley Sunshine

Meet Dax, the official supervisor of Dragon Fire Plants… or at least that’s what he thinks. 🦜

Dax is my Aussie Princess Parrot and full-time feathered rockstar who is completely obsessed with AC/DC. The second the music stops, he starts headbanging like he’s front row at a stadium concert demanding an encore. Meanwhile I’m sitting there trying to relax thinking, “Mate, give me five minutes!” 😂

Dax is actually the “Dragon” in Dragon Fire Plants because he’s got a fiery personality, especially when his playlist isn’t loud enough.

Behind the scenes, Dragon Fire Plants is a small backyard nursery where I grow and propagate:
🌶️ Chilli & capsicum plants
🌱 Herbs, flowers & vegetable seedlings
🌳 Bonsai & pre-bonsai stock
🌵 Succulents & native plants

I also make handmade chilli jams, chutneys, pickles, preserves, and pastes that pack more punch than Dax hearing the opening riff of Thunderstruck. ⚡🌶️

Most plants are grown and propagated on-site using my own modified potting mixes and propagation methods. I’m always experimenting, learning, and trying new ways to grow healthier plants naturally.

So if you enjoy gardening, bonsai, spicy food, parrots with questionable music addictions, or backyard nursery chaos, follow Dragon Fire Plants for plant tips, propagation updates, and plenty of chilli-fuelled adventures. 🔥

🌱🌶️ PROPAGATION SEASON HAS STARTED AT DRAGON FIRE PLANTS 🌶️🌱

I’ve officially started taking pepper and capsicum cuttings, and it’s been exciting putting the propagation skills I learned through TAFE into practice. From propagation methods to choosing the right potting mediums, I’ve already had success with my first tray of cuttings!

My goal is to grow trays containing at least two varieties of every pepper and capsicum plant I currently have. This helps preserve strong genetics while producing healthy, locally grown plants suited to the Riverina climate.

I mix my own natural potting blend using ingredients such as compost, perlite, coco peat, and vermiculite, combined with a low dose of fertiliser and rooting hormone powder. I like controlling exactly what goes into my mixes instead of relying on generic commercial blends. 🌿

No exact recipe reveal though… that’s a Dragon Fire Plants trade secret! 🔥🪴

If everything continues growing well, I should have an even bigger and better range of healthy locally grown stock ready by spring. Supporting local means getting plants raised in local conditions, not trucked halfway across the country.

One day I’d love to upgrade to a cement mixer just for blending larger batches of potting mix. Backyard nursery dreams slowly becoming reality! 🌱

🌿 PORTULACARIA AFRA BONSAI 🌿

This is a Portulacaria afra, commonly known as Dwarf Jade or Elephant Bush, trained in a bonsai style using wire shaping techniques to create movement and structure over time. 🪴

This species is one of my favourite succulent bonsai plants because it develops thick trunks quickly and responds very well to pruning and shaping. Its small leaves and hardy nature make it an excellent choice for beginners learning bonsai.

🌞 Growing Tips:
• Prefers bright light or full sun
• Use a free-draining succulent or bonsai mix
• Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry before watering again
• Avoid overwatering during winter
• Easy to propagate from stem cuttings
• Regular pruning encourages dense branching and compact growth

Portulacaria afra is very drought tolerant once established and handles Australian conditions extremely well, especially in warmer and drier regions.

🌳 Australian Bottle Tree Journey 🌳

I grew this Australian Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris), also known as the Queensland Bottle Tree, from seed and have been shaping it from a very young age. These trees are best worked on early because they naturally develop a thick trunk over time, creating that iconic bottle-shaped appearance they’re famous for.

Young Bottle Trees have incredible foliage with deeply lobed leaves made up of narrow segments, giving them an almost prehistoric look. As they mature, the leaves change shape completely, becoming narrow and lance-like. Nature really puts this tree through a full character arc 🌿

Native to Queensland and northern New South Wales, Brachychiton rupestris is highly drought tolerant because it stores water inside its trunk. This makes it an excellent choice for Australian gardens, bonsai projects, and collectors who love unusual sculptural trees.

The famous swollen “bottle” trunk usually starts forming after around 5 to 8 years, so this one is still very much a work in progress, but that’s part of the fun of growing trees from seed. Watching them slowly transform over the years is one of the most rewarding parts of bonsai and plant growing.

🌿 Bonsai Journey Update 🌿

Last year I picked up this Buxus for free from Facebook, and instead of leaving it as an ordinary shrub, I decided to turn it into a bonsai project. I believe it’s a Buxus microphylla (Japanese Box). It’s still very much a work in progress, but that’s part of the fun of bonsai. Tiny tree, big patience. 🌱✨

Buxus are great for bonsai because they respond well to pruning, develop nice branching, and can handle the Riverina climate surprisingly well once established. Regular trimming helps encourage dense growth, while a well-draining mix keeps the roots healthy and happy.

Current goals for this tree:
🍃 Improve branch structure
🌳 Develop trunk character and taper
✂️ Encourage tighter foliage pads
🪴 Continue root and pot training

Bonsai isn’t about rushing. It’s like gardening mixed with sculpture and a dash of time travel. You shape today what might look amazing years from now.

🌱 Busy Behind the Scenes at Dragon Fire Plants 🌱

I haven’t posted as much lately, but behind the scenes I’ve been flat out propagating plants and growing new stock for the nursery. As a small backyard nursery, my goal is to propagate as much as possible on-site rather than relying on wholesale suppliers. Watching tiny cuttings strike roots and turn into healthy plants is half science experiment, half plant wizardry 🪴✨

Currently propagating:
🌿 Eucalyptus Silver Dollar
🌿 Buxus
🌿 Lemon Myrtle
🌶️ Capsicum annuum – Peppers & Capsicums

I use my own modified organic potting mix depending on the type of cutting I’m working with, then add a small amount of PowerFeed Original to help support healthy root growth. Since we’re now heading into autumn and winter, cuttings will naturally take a bit longer to establish because cooler temperatures slow growth.

🌱 Quick Tips for Taking Garden Cuttings:
✂️ Use clean, sharp secateurs
💧 Keep the potting mix lightly moist, not soaking wet
🌤️ Place cuttings in bright indirect light
🍃 Remove excess leaves to reduce moisture loss
🌡️ Warmth and humidity help improve strike rates

It would really help if I could get my greenhouse repaired soon. At the moment I’m improvising with seed trays and clear plastic bags tied around them to keep humidity up. Backyard nurseries run on creativity, determination, and occasionally questionable engineering 😂
