Great news from The Garden Clinic radio show today when Graham Ross spoke with the Honourable David Littleproud (the Federal Minister for Agriculture): Garden Centres are you remain open!
Here’s an excerpt, or you may listen as well https://www.2gb.com/podcast/the-garden-clinic-full-show-saturday-11th-april-2020/ at 51:00 minutes:

Extract from David Littleproud (DL) interview with Graham Ross GR) on 2GB Saturday morning 11th April: Today’ show is Graham’s 40th Birthday of the Garden Clinic.

@ 54m:22s…………

DL: …. What we often as a community and a society do is reflect on what’s important to us, and what you’ve done in bringing your gardening show to many Australians over such a long period…reflects what’s important to us and I think we’re turning back to the basics; the basics are looking after our gardens, our home, and appreciating the importance and the value of them; not just to ourselves but to our families, and I think, you know, it’s times like these Graham, it’s the birthdays that in these trying times you reflect and understand what a great job you guys have done, and we really are appreciative of it.

GR: I appreciate your call David, it’s lovely for you to let us know that the Federal Government is thinking about us gardeners , because ah one of the things ah that I’m acutely aware of is that, you know, we’re ..home gardeners and people who haven’t gardened maybe for a long, long time have hit the Garden Centres, because we know that they’ve purchased 8.5 million punnets of seedlings; a lot of veggies. They’re home isolated with their families wanting to grow something ……..…Can I just ask you something? Will the Garden Centres be allowed to remain open?

DL: Yeah look, at the moment definitely so, and I think we’ve got no plans or any other reasons not to keep them going, and they are, in short I think; they’ll be essential for everyone’s mental well-being Graham it’s …as you’ve just articulated so many people have rediscovered Gardening and it’s going to help us get through this self-isolation. We’ve got to a point, to a junction now, if everybody does what we’ve asked them to do, in terms of self-isolation and social distancing when they do go out, then there is no further need for us to have further closures, so this will play an essential part in supporting our community, so I’m quite confident that we’ll continue to see those retail outlets that are able to open now will continue to be able to do so, because there’s a responsible nature that our society is undertaking that social distancing; so it will play a part, and I think that you’ll find that we will see a lot of our nurseries stay open, albeit for our mental well-being as well, and I think that’s significantly under-estimated; the value of gardening in helping us get through this isolation mentally, and that’ll be something that will be very important. Something the Federal Government takes into account when we make our decisions; predicated off the medical advice we get.

GR: Thank you mate. I appreciate that. Thank you very much for your call. I wish you and Sarah all the very best in the future. I’m glad you’re home and not in Canberra, for this Easter long weekend mate. All the very best to you David. Take care pal.

DL: Thanks Graham, great to be with you and Happy Birthday.

GR: Thanks a lot Mate .David Littleproud. Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Drought, and Minister for Emergency Management. He’s only a young fellow, but by golly, he’s got a lot on his shoulders, and he’s just one of the best Ministers we’ve ever had in that Portfolio, Portfolios in fact, for a long, long time.

COVID-19 GARDEN CENTRES ARE DEEMED AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE : The NGINA (the NSW State Industry Association) has been liaising with the NSW Minister for Agriculture and Western New South Wales on behalf of Members surrounding COVID-19 and what sectors fall into the “essential services” category.
The Minister’s Policy Director has confirmed with the NGINA that all nurseries – retail, wholesale and production are considered “essential services” and should conduct “business as usual”, however, Members need to follow all formal advice and recommendations surrounding COVID-19 concerning social distancing and hygiene.
If your retail nursery has a Café, this needs to comply with the conditions as per the non-essential activities and businesses listed below and should be closed temporarily.
• Pubs, registered clubs
• Gyms, indoor sporting venues
• Cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs
• Restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery
• Religious gatherings, places of worship (excluding small weddings and funerals that comply with the 4m2 rule, which can proceed).
The NGINA recommends that all Members follow the Australian Government Department of Health page to ensure that you are meeting the stringent rules around gatherings and how to reduce the risk of transferring the virus at your nursery: https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for-public-gatherings-and-visits-to-vulnerable-groups
Please note that the NGINA are doing everything we can to keep you informed with the most current advice as it becomes available. All information contained in this email is current at the time of publishing.
Also worth noting the following:
• Over the next few days, NSW and ACT could have different restrictions and policies in place concerning COVID-19. We are continuing to monitor and seek information from both NSW and ACT, so information is relevant to your area.
• We understand that state borders are closing and we are looking at what this means for intrastate plant movements.
• Fairwork Australia, NSW Business Chamber, Department of Health and many more Government channels and departments are providing up to date information which we are also continually monitoring.
