Goals and Objectives
At Swan Bay Sustainable Gardens, it has come to our attention that this beautiful Bellarine Peninsula is becoming a place to take up residence to raise your family, retire from all your hard work over the years, or just to live and enjoy all the lovely things that this Peninsula has to offer.
With all the development going on, building blocks getting smaller and our Peninsula even seeming to be shrinking, the people who love gardening may find it difficult to find the space at home to grow their own vegetables or garden on the scale that they would like to. Perhaps you have just retired and love gardening but don’t know many people in the area. Here we offer a great place to meet like minded gardeners and perhaps even share a plot with a friend or someone else if you feel a plot is too large for one person.
At Swan Bay Sustainable Gardens, we would like to share in the beautiful gift we have of working together with nature in the garden to produce your own food from which you know how it has been grown from a seedling to mature food ready to be consumed. Each of the 40 Garden Plots are 6 metres wide by 12 metres long, fully fenced with a tap next to each gate. It is a blank canvas for you to decide how you would like to plan and build your garden.
With others who have a like mind, you can take advantage of the vast amount of knowledge and experience that would be gathered in one place. A small group of people who love to spend time in the garden; who, could come together to share their knowledge or be taught by one another with conversations over the fence or over coffee in the amenities room provided. Each plot has a ‘letter pipe’ so that letters or messages can be sent or shared from plot to plot.
How better to spend a day than gardening with friends in your fully fenced plot. Then, to retire to the community room for a break or lunch (which you provide) or even a picnic around the dam on a lovely sunny day.
Various ways you can utilise a plot are to:
• grow your own vegetables or flowers directly into the ground
• install raised garden beds for those who prefer a little height
• grow crops that you can sell or give away to friends
• create a chicken hutch and run some chickens for eggs as well as some garden space
• share a plot, two or more with others to create your own community garden
• make a space where there is none for ‘Men’s shed’ members, who prefer to spend time in the garden, rather than do building projects
• provide an area for family’s that like to do things together, where they can grow their own vegetables as part of spending time together
• set up a hot house to grow seedlings which you could sell or grow in your garden
• get a group of gardeners from a retirement village who would like to share a plot and spend time gardening together.
Each plot contains a fully fenced area of 6 metres x 12 metres (72 square metres). A blank canvas to create. A garden tap with water supplied from tanks. Full use of the amenities building where you can prepare your lunches or snacks, sit around, and relax, read the books, or play pool from the pool table.
Each plot has a cost of $55.00 per week which includes the plot, GST, water, and full use of the amenities building.
If you wish to secure a plot please email: [email protected] or contact Ray at Swan Bay Sustainable Gardens on 0418 525 095.
