If your flue has a rust spot on the outside like this one it means it has had a chimney fire in it at some stage. The heat causes the gal coating to let go and rust sets in. Rust around the top hat like this one will also let water in to the inner flue when it rains. Make sure your flue is cleaned from the top if possible, not just a quick scrub from the bottom. All these repairs would have been missed if only checked from the bottom.

Chimneys cleaning season has begun. Cleaned this one today. Don’t let your professional contractor clean your flue just from the bottom without checking the top. I cleaned this one from the bottom, realised I hadn’t gotten all the way to the top so got up on this roof, took the top hat off, found this nest in the top and another blockage half way down. If I hadn’t checked from the top this flue would have caught fire. Be careful on making sure you employ a professional to make your flue safe. Make sure they can produce proof of insurance too before they go clambering around on your roof
