🎉 40 years, thousands of trees, countless projects… and probably a few chainsaws along the way 🌳

Recently, we celebrated 40 years of Arbor Centre with family, friends, clients and the people who’ve been part of the journey over the years.

A great night of laughs, stories, old photos and reflecting on how far the business has come since 1985.

We’ve also shared a blog looking back on the journey, the projects, and the people behind Arbor Centre:

Here’s to the next chapter 🥂

Forty years ago, a passion for trees, innovation, and doing things differently laid the foundations for what would become one of Australia’s most respected arboricultural companies - the Arbor Centre Group.

“Should we remove the tree?” 🌳

Sometimes the answer is yes. But often, there’s another option worth considering first.

From structural concerns to maintenance headaches, there are a few important things to assess before making the call to remove a tree, especially when mature trees provide so much value to our landscapes and communities.

We’ve put together a quick blog on what to consider before deciding 👇

https://arborcentre.com.au/should-you-remove-that-tree/

It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked: “Should I remove this tree?” The answer isn’t always straightforward.

Moving big trees is more science than muscle.

A few great takeaways from “Moving Big Trees” by Rob Bodenstaff:

🔍 You don’t just move a tree, you prepare it months in advance - Before a tree is relocated, a trench is dug around it to cut the roots. This encourages new roots to grow in a compact ball, making the tree safer to move and more likely to survive.

🌱 The root ball is everything - The root system can weigh almost as much as the entire tree. Protecting it (with harnesses and soil intact) is critical to keeping the tree alive.

⏳ Timing matters - Trees are typically prepared at the end of summer, moved in winter, and carefully maintained until they can be replanted.

💧 Aftercare is just as important as the move - Once relocated, trees require constant watering and support (including wires and anchoring) until new roots are strong enough to hold them in place.

🚧 It’s a full-scale operation - We’re talking cranes, trucks, harness systems, trenches, and coordinated teams — all to preserve mature trees that would otherwise be lost during major infrastructure works.

🌿 And the payoff? - After a few years, the trees settle back in. and look just as they did before, continuing to provide value to the environment and community.

Pretty incredible what goes on behind the scenes 👏

These photos capture a project undertaken by Arbor Centre for Transurban in Melbourne in 1995, relocating a mature tree using specialised lifting equipment and a carefully prepared root ball.

Relocating trees of this size is a complex operation requiring detailed planning, heavy machinery, and experienced operators to safely lift, transport and re-establish the tree.

Projects like this highlight something that has always been at the core of what we do at Arbor Centre, finding ways to preserve mature trees wherever possible, even when development and infrastructure projects are underway.

For decades, our team has been involved in large-scale tree relocation across Australia, helping protect established trees and the landscapes they shape.

While we’re passionate about preserving and relocating mature trees wherever possible, there are times when removal is the responsible option.

Trees may need to be removed due to structural instability, disease, storm damage, safety risks, or to allow for necessary infrastructure and development. In these cases, careful planning and experienced arborists are essential to ensure the work is carried out safely and efficiently.

This video shows our team in action, using specialised equipment and expertise to safely dismantle and remove a large tree.

At Arbor Centre, our goal is always the same: make the best decision for the landscape, the community, and the long-term health of the urban canopy.

Ever wondered how a mature tree gets relocated?

This footage captures the two-day process involved in relocating a Buddha Tree back in 2013.

Moving established trees is a highly specialised operation requiring careful planning, the right equipment, and an experienced team. From preparing the root ball through to lifting, transporting and re-establishing the tree, every step needs precision and coordination.

A great look behind the scenes at what’s involved in large-scale tree relocation.
