IPM - Integrated/Intelligent Pest Management. Some of my citrus and avocado trees are struggling against the challenge of these guys - tiny cone snails. The weevils have joined in the assault but it’s the cone snails doing the most damage. An example of a barrier method for prevention is copper tape. Snails don’t like touching copper, so it’s great around the top of raised garden beds or around the legs of propagation tables. I’ve used fabric on the trees so as not to stick directly to the plant. Results will be monitored. I can also report that cutting fabric to wrap around fiddly little trees on a super windy day with lots of flies is a stupid idea πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ’¨πŸƒπŸͺ° I need ducks.

Thinking I had to buy in garden soil for my new (and still empty) veg bed, I had a moment of brilliance in deciding to dig out the lower tunnel of the chook yard instead. This patch of the chook yard is where they huddle in the warmer parts of the day, everyday. All that poo, coupled with the four lots of deep litter hay and woodchip chucked in over two & a half years that has broken down, made epic soil that I was able to utilise. β€œUse what you have!” The bed was weeded, a frog disturbed (sorry mate 🐸), a small hugelkultur made with chopped broad bean plants and fruit tree prunings, then chook yard soil, soil wetter and Popul8 for a microbe boost, then mulch. Will let it rest for a week, then add compost and start planting more veg and flowers πŸŒΈπŸŒ»πŸŒΌπŸ“πŸ₯’πŸŒ½πŸ…

Spring might be my new favourite season… although Autumn is still more of a relief after Summer. But the colours πŸ₯°πŸŒΈπŸŒ»πŸŒΌπŸŒ·. Margs Permaculture Group were here today. We talked about how my garden is planned in Permaculture Zones. They had a good walk around, chat and a delicious afternoon tea. It was delightful talking to a group of experienced gardeners, then hearing some very encouraging feedback on what we’ve achieved here. I am proud of our patch πŸ’š. Off the back of teaching at my first PDC at Fair Harvest Permaculture Farm, which was a whirlwind of joy and positivity, this was the next best day since then to engage in the sense of community that gardens create.

Orchard Posts are a GO!!! We’ve been waiting what seems like ages to to make a start on the enclosed orchard. As with life in general it was a case of time, money, physical ability, weather, sick kids, and so on. But today was the most beautiful gardening day here in Witchy, so we spent the entire day outside (except for maybe one episode of Ally McBeal in bed because it was hard to wake up … πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ). So the back section is 2 thirds done, grasses slashed and the bases of the fruit trees had a little love with serious weeding and prepped for manure and mulch. The full structure will be 8.5m x 14.8m with 3 doors/gates, poly flex line on star pickets which will be attached to the perimeter posts, with bird net over the top. Not only will this protect the fruit trees, but future crops of berry bushes & canes and fruiting summer veg. Have to take 3 more acacia saligna trees down to allow for the netting but will be replacing with more long lived flowering natives on the fence lines for wind protection, privacy and pollinator food 🐝
