Congratulations to our partner Tanzila Ahmed for receiving recognition for her Master's thesis, completed last year as part of the MSc Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design (IUSD) program at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
Her research, conducted under the SDGs GoGlocal! research program and funded by the DAAD PROMOS Scholarship, investigates a women-led informal settlement upgrading process in Gobabis, Namibia, in sub-Saharan Africa. The Freedom Square settlement in Gobabis was upgraded to a formal settlement through a women driven process. This research explores the experiences of the women involved, highlighting both the challenges they faced and the immediate as well as long-term impacts on their social and economic conditions. Evaluating this process through a gender lens contributes to the development of gender mainstreamed participatory approaches in urban development.
Her thesis has been awarded The Prima! Prize and The Equitable Spaces Award by the University of Stuttgart this year. A journal article based on her thesis is available in the open access journal ‘Land’ by MDPI: https://www.mdpi.com/2073-445X/14/2/373

'An Architectural Palimpsest' refers to the deliberate integration of contemporary architectural interventions within existing historical frameworks, establishing a cohesive dialogue where each layer informs and enriches the other. This principle underpins the current design proposal, which seeks to harmoniously merge historical authenticity with contemporary architectural expression.
The design places significant emphasis on safeguarding the heritage value of the Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque, the unique topographical features of its hilltop site, and the broader historical and cultural identity of the Chittagong region. Traditionally distinguished by its hilly landscape, Chittagong has recently undergone extensive flattening due to urbanization, threatening the character of its natural environment. Once defined by its undulating terrain, the city has increasingly undergone urban flattening, erasing much of its natural topography. The Anderkilla Mosque site faces an even more intricate challenge—navigating a delicate balance between market expansion, mosque compound growth, and the preservation of both the historic structure and its natural surroundings. In response, the design aims to protect and celebrate the site's original topography while ensuring the architectural conservation of the mosque.
Enhancing public spaces, improving pedestrian movement, and establishing strong spatial linkages between the mosque, adjacent book market, and communal areas reinforce its integration into the evolving urban fabric. The preservation of the hill’s natural features not only safeguards its ecological and historical significance but also encourages public engagement with the landscape. This approach fosters a symbiotic relationship between spiritual practices, architectural heritage, and environmental stewardship, ultimately strengthening the cultural fabric of the region.
