B-city architecten

B-city architecten We guide complex urban projects and supervise their creation. The three architects met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam.

Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten. It was at the internationally oriented Berlage Institute where it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office has expanded to three locations, Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, the trio launc

hed a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten – an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design. In 2020, B-city was launched as a B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts. In 2022, B reinforced itself with a fourth pillar: B-juxta, the division of B that dedicates itself to restoration and renovation projects. B-juxta evolved from the Ghent-based Juxta, which has its roots in Architectenbureau Van Acker – later Avapartners. Since its establishment in 1967, the office grew into an important player in Flanders in the field of restoration, renovation and reallocation of architectural heritage and continues to live on today as part of B. With B-juxta came the third operating base: a stately townhouse in Ghent's so-called 'millionaires quarter' that exudes history but where, inside, we work on the future. As such, today B operates from Belgium's three university capitals: Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. As a result, B has naturally grown into an office of more than 100 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.

With the recent heat still fresh in mind, this is a timely moment to reflect on how climate and urban design are becoming increasingly intertwined. A contribution by B-city team member Maarten Van Acker (University of Antwerp).

(New project) Shaping the future of ‘Prinskouter in Patroon’, Ronse.

B-city has been shortlisted to submit an offer for a new concept study in Ronse: ‘Prinskouter in Patroon’. The historic Prinskouter workers’ neighbourhood — a socially vulnerable district on the edge of the city — will be explored for ways to improve housing, public space and mobility in an integrated way.

The Flemish government’s concept grant supports the city in developing a forward-looking vision and identifying practical levers for urban renewal in this historically valuable, yet vulnerable, district.

The project also connects several B divisions (B-architecten, B-juxta and B-city) and continues our collaboration with long-standing partner Stadim, an independent real estate advisory firm.

A chance to combine heritage, social impact and urban renewal — watch this space.

(Throwback) Exploring two urban futures

At the end of last year, B-city completed two concept studies for the cities of Turnhout and Oudenaarde — a valuable and engaging process together with B-juxta, OMGEVING and IDEA.

Concept studies, initiated by the Flemish Urban Policy Department, focus on projects that are not yet fully defined and require in-depth conceptual exploration. In 2024, five such trajectories were awarded — we were entrusted with two.

In Turnhout, the Grooten Singel study lays the groundwork for a broader urban renewal project. In Oudenaarde, the redevelopment of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw hospital site explores the transformation of a historic site into an open and collective urban platform, bringing together public services, heritage and civic life.

Both studies are not final designs, but shared visions — establishing a spatial framework and project definition for the next phases to build on.

One more seat to fill —
B-city is looking for a new colleague to join the team!

B is the sum of four studio divisions called B-architecten, B-bis, B-city and B-juxta. At B-architecten, we design sustainable buildings that enhance both the urban and the open space.

(In the works) From September, B-city kicks off a research-by-design study on several industrial sites around The Loop junction in south-west Ghent — part of our five-year framework contract with the city.

The fragmented territory, defined by heavy infrastructure and spatial barriers, offers both challenges and opportunities. The aim? To develop a flexible toolbox of spatial strategies that can guide sustainable and climate-resilient transformation over time.

This study brings together ongoing visions into a shared framework — one that links open space, mobility, and future programming in a coherent urban structure.

This past weekend, we presented three possible future scenarios for the Grooten Singel site in Turnhout to the wider public. This participatory moment marked the conclusion of our design research, carried out on behalf of the City of Turnhout.

Grooten Singel is the city's oldest urban block — a site rich in meaning and potential, but currently marked by vacancy and underused space. Together with the city, we’ve been exploring how this area might evolve in the long term into a sustainable, vibrant and green neighbourhood, with space for housing, nature, social interaction and public facilities.

Over the past months, our design-led research has resulted in three spatial scenarios, each proposing a different response to the insights from the initial analysis. These were shared and discussed with the city, key partners, experts and residents — and now also with the broader community.

All of this input will now inform the development of a synthesis scenario: not a fixed masterplan, but a guiding framework the city can use to support future decisions and developments.

(Read) Ghent's Dampoort is one of the topics covered in the current edition of Ruimte, the magazine of the VRP Vlaamse Vereniging voor Ruimte en Planning.

The area around Dampoort - traditionally an important gateway to the inner city of Ghent - transformed over the past two hundred years into one of the busiest (and most dangerous) intersections in Flanders. The spatial fracture in the urban fabric was also increasing. The city of Ghent therefore presented a master plan with a radical turnaround in 2020, which B-city drew up together with Omgeving and Arcadis.

The article elaborates on the problems in this part of the city and which solutions are offered in the master plan for the future in terms of mobility, but also liveability and image quality.

(A gentle reminder to visit!) No weekend plans yet? This sunday, 8 September, is Open Monumentendag and the Arsenaal site in Ghent will be open to the public with a number of guided tours.

The Arsenaal site is dominated by sheds and a tangle of train tracks. It was built in 1881 as the Atelier Central de Réparation to maintain and repair steam locomotives and freight wagons. Until 2018, it was in full operation and only accessible to NMBS employees.

The site was bought a few years ago by the Arsenaal 3PK consortium. As project director and designer of the master plan, B-city plays a key role in its current redevelopment. Het Arsenaal is to become a new, innovatively interwoven city district with great respect for the past. On 8/9, you can discover the traces of this unique industrial heritage on a guided tour and be inspired by the future plans.

The tours are free, but advance registration is required. Book your visit here: https://www.openmonumentendag.be/activiteiten/het-arsenaal
