The most obvious thing in this kitchen is its yellow cabinets. It is the first thing you see, and it gives your mood an instant boost. But what makes this design work for me is not the colour, but the bespoke solutions we used throughout the design.

A cabinet that opens on both the front and the back makes it easy to use the tableware in both kitchen and dining room. A built in table can be stored away when not in use. Slits in the worktop make sure the radiator underneath is able to give off its heat.

And the most beautiful piece of all: the bespoke sink that the owners had made especially for them. It gives a unique touch to this design and I absolutely love it.

Interior design proposal for Marlies and Zander.

Zander is an architect and made the design of the renovation. I was called in to help with the interior. I took inspiration from the terrace cover, which has an angular opening for a tree. For the kitchen island I used this shape as a reference to make an island that is not straight but has a more interesting shape.

There will still be some changes made to the design. We are looking at the right colour and material combinations, the right part of the island will be opened up to add a bar area, and I’m rethinking the bespoke furniture in the living room.

Who says a steel partition wall needs to be black?

I absolutely love these powder pink frames. We deliberately chose the same colour as the rest of the bathroom. I believe this way there is more impact. We could have chosen whited but that would have been a lot more boring, in black they would have been too harsh. And I do love a good colour drenching here and there.

For this kitchen the changes are subtle (I’m not talking about the colour here😉). Tine and Wouter are in need of more workspace and more practical storage solutions. To achieve this, we added an extra breakfast area. This way the worktop is extended so there is more space to prepare food.

On the other side the cabinets for fridge and ovens are moved closer to the pantry. Above the doorway to the living room extra cabinets will be installed. This way, the door opening will be framed, we created a bit of extra storage and the workspace on that side of the kitchen is also enlarged.

Apart from that, the kitchen will be equipped with enough drawers and corner solutions to maximalist the space. And to fit the clients love for vintage finds, we include vintage glass storage containers.

And on a less subtle move: the kitchen will be flamingo pink (yes, that’s the name of the colour) combined with a soft butter yellow.

I can’t wait to see this one in real life!

An interior is supposed to be lived in, to be used. It should be personal, and should fit you like a glove.

This kitchen for Marianne and Jan is exactly that. No sleek showroom kitchen, but a space that exudes warmth and personality.

The base of the kitchen is neutral with laminated doors in a wood decor and a ceramic countertop. To that we added unique, personal touches. Reclaimed wooden crates are used for storage in one place and become a cosy seating area in another. Colourful cushions add punch and the beautiful tiles bring colour. All this is finished with vintage finds and personal decorations.

This is a kitchen that is actually used. How it is supposed to be!

I often get the question: what do people do usually? Or: is this on trend? Or: will this help me sell the house in 10 years?

Who cares?! You’re not going to let other people live in your house, so why would you let other people decide on how it is going to look like? I get that it is tempting to ask advise. Often though I notice that it makes my client doubt. Where they were sure about certain colours or design choices, talking to friends and family often makes them unsure.

There is a reason why people work with me (or other interior architects). We see things from a different perspective. We listen and interpret your needs into an interior that is fit to you. Not to your dad, not to your friends and not to your neighbour.

So pick that colour you love, choose that unconventional material or quirky detail, go for the layout that works for you! That way you will love your interior.

For this pink bathroom we did exactly that. Sure, an open plan doesn’t work for everybody. And steel doors usually don’t come in pink. But so what. Picking exactly those personalised details are what make this attic renovation so good.

For most of my life, I’ve been the listener. The one who wants to hear your worries and celebrate your wins. I would put myself a little to the side so everyone else can be themselves.

I’m an overthinker. I care, probably too much. I want the people around me to be happy, even when it costs me.

Then I got sick. And cancer has a way of making you reconsider things. I didn’t realise it at first, but now I do notice a shift in who I am and how I live.

I’m learning, slowly, to choose myself. To say what I need and to stop apologising for taking up space. If I seem a little more selfish these days, I’m not. I’m just finally on my own list.

I still love to dance in the kitchen, sing loudly when I’m with people I feel most comfortable with, read late into the night, and laugh until I cry. Humour is non-negotiable and so is honesty and respect. I feel like I am finally becoming the person I always was.

Not every design makes it to the final cut.

Sometimes the budget shifts. Sometimes the materials aren’t quite right. Sometimes life changes the plan entirely.
But every sketch, every almost, every “not this time”, they all teach me something, and they all stay with me.

Throwback to one of the first projects I designed when I started my design company. And boy, I still love this one so much. I retrete not having more photos of this project.

Swipe to see the plans, before and after. There you can see the big impact a well thought of plan can have. Their old kitchen was a combination of two small spaces. One had a small kitchen cramped in, with not enough storage space and not enough working space. The other had a few high cabinets and a string cabinet (which we kept) for extra storage.

For the new design, I added a small kitchen peninsula in the first space the is adjacent to the dining room. This allows more contact to the living spaces. But mainly, it ties the two rooms together and makes the kitchen feel much more coherent and intentional.

The sink is placed underneath the window, to have a view to the garden. The appliances are installed in a ceiling height cabinet. And last but not least, we placed a low cabinet attached to the peninsula. Extra storage, but also a spot to sit and socialise, without using loose furniture that always gets in the way.

And to top it off: the entire kitchen is drenched with colour. The blue and green make a vibrant design that brings you joy.

Kitchen renovation for Annemie.

The existing space was too small for a family of four, so an extension was installed. But what to do with the space?

I closed the existing door, or at least partially, so we didn’t loose the connection with the living room. The window that originally looked out to the garden was removed. The opening was enlarged downward so we could use this as the new doorway. This way the circulation in the living room was optimised.

Originally the client thought of a kitchen island in line with the cabinets. I proposed to turn it with 90 degrees, so instead of looking to the neighbours, you can now see into the garden while garden. Ideal for this family with little kids. By adding this perspective to the garden, we not only create a view on the playing kids. By doing this, the kitchen also feels larger, because the garden is incorporated visually.

I don’t have professional photos yet, but hey, life isn’t perfect, so I’m very happy with these photos my client gave me.
