A&B is a ceramics workshop that produces handmade and hand-painted tiles in the Portuguese azulejos-style. I am a craftsman working on my own, and am responsible for the whole process, right from cutting the raw clay to baking the finished product. The tiles are therefore a bit irregular. As a result, they show a depth and warmth that modern, factory- made tiles often lack. After the tiles have be
en baked in the kiln once, they are coated with a layer of tin oxide (white). They are then painted, usually in blue, without using any stamps. Every tile is unique – even tiles with a recurring pattern (the so- called Pombaline style). Once the painting is done, the glazed tiles are fired a second time.
