Julian - Brussels, 2025.

For this bathroom, I gave a try to mortex plaster. Even though I always defend the most natural materials, it’s always interesting to experiment other type of materials and techniques.

Thank you everyone that was involved. Working with lime requires effort and dedication (last picture is a testimony) !

Next steps: roof insulation and flooring.

Camplong, France, 2025.

Hempcrete insulation built in-situ with a mix of hydrated lime and hydraulic lime.
As many stone houses, walls come with a lot of surprises (falling parts, massively uneven, etc), add to this a weather around 37 degrees, and delays and error of the materials… A challenging worksite accomplished with the great effort of the owners and friends!

Sneak peak of stuccos and lime wash work in Turkey, may 2025.

I volunteered on these projects with .atelier. Although we had different views on how volunteers should be treated, I still had the opportunity to practice and improve my skills applying lime stucco on larger surfaces.

This experience raised some important questions for me about the role of volunteers in professional projects:
– What are the ethical boundaries when a project generates income but relies on volunteer labor?
– What amount of work is reasonable to expect from a volunteer?
– How many hours per day is acceptable?

Despite the challenges, this experience helped me better understand what I do—and don’t—want to implement when working with volunteers on my own future job sites.

In April I made a (short) but intense comeback to my home country: Belgium. I was lucky enough to quickly connect with like-minded folks.
In two weeks I was catapulted on large scale plastering jobs integrating team.
If you don’t know them, it is a dedicated company of eco-builders operating in Belgium since about two decades.
The beginning of new adventure and enlarged natural builders family !

On the picture: exterior lime plaster on Hempcrete blocks in two layers. Projected and sponged finish.

Japanese plasters found during autumn trip in 2024.
Some are very rough, other so fine and technical. Definitely an endless inspirational country when it comes to its crafts.
