Reviving the timeless charm of the Château de Sancerre called for an ambitious client, a dedicated construction team, and countless hours of thoughtful design. Today, the estate has been reborn as Les Hauts de Sancerre, a boutique hotel overlooking some of the region’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Its gardens—now entering their second growing season—are slowly transforming into a truly atmospheric retreat. And we’re not done yet: by spring 2026, the grounds will welcome a new swimming pool and a generous panoramic terrace for the gourmet restaurant La Table d’Arnaud.

Design in progress, magic unfolding.

We love color—and we’re not afraid to push things to the extreme. So you can imagine our excitement when we got to work on this home.
Instead of relying on vibrant blooms, we went all-in on expressive plants with bold, graphic foliage and striking silhouettes: Eriobotrya, Fatsia, sumac, Ginkgo, Mahonia…

And then, for a few weeks each year, everything snaps perfectly into place. Autumn drops its magic over the garden, turning up the color and creating surprising connections with the home’s architectural details.

There’s a lot happening here: a former barn, dramatically transformed into a contemporary home with a rich complexity of spaces and forms. A towering, heavy monastic wall dominates the northern edge of the site. And on the other side, an open view of a park and orchard. That’s quite a mix.

So, we chose to let these strong elements take the spotlight—and keep our own intervention deliberately modest. Aside from a few steps crafted from reclaimed blue limestone blocks found on-site, we worked solely with informal planting to weave everything together.

The enclosed, north-facing space between the house and the monastery wall was kept dense and lush, reinforcing the weight of the setting. In contrast, the south-facing garden that opens onto the orchard was left largely untouched, creating the impression that the orchard flows naturally into the garden.

A brutalist UFO-like house by architect Jo Crepain, a lone palm tree, and residents with a love for the tropics and surfing — plus a bold blue outdoor office by Blancooo architects. That was the unconventional starting point for this garden design.

We leaned fully into the un-Belgian vibe of the setting, adding a concrete swimming pond and lush, exotic plantings to keep the solitary palm tree company. The result is still in its early days, but the Brazilian energy is already palpable. I can’t wait to see how it evolves in the coming years!

ust a year ago, this thriving wild garden was nothing more than an open horse meadow. Since then, we’ve transformed it into a haven for biodiversity—scraping off patches of old vegetation to sow vibrant flower meadows, while leaving other areas untouched to grow wild. We planted hundreds of shrubs—a mix of native and cultivated varieties—along with fast-growing birches, slower-growing trees, and dozens of fruit and nut trees. The best part? The kids rule this space, and it’s heartwarming to see how naturally they bond with the wild world around them!

DAY OFF / OFFICE DAY
Tuesday was the perfect day to look back and visit some of our gardens that have been growing for a couple of seasons now. It’s always a bit tricky since we’ve had some challenging periods of drought and extreme rainfall during the past years. But we’re happy with these results and knowing that our babies are in good hands!

The start of the second growing season for this forest garden on a very sandy soil. Last year, the abundant rainfall really boosted the young plants, and now they seem to thrive quite well, despite the record-breaking drought we are again dealing with. Fingers crossed for some good rain 🤞

This past year we spent quite a bit of time designing and following up the renovation of the park at the Château de Sancerre (indeed, of the delicious wine). How wonderful it was to be able to work in such a setting. In the end, it was a very technical renovation but the result is worth it. Right now the castle is being renovated into a boutique hotel at breakneck speed, and next week the second part of the garden works will start.
