Curved plywood! These oak plywood modules, designed by Christophe Gevers for the Generale Bank (1978), are definitely one of our favourite ceiling systems. We did consider for a while keeping the remaining 155 pieces for ourselves, to hang them somewhere on our premises and create a spectacular space. In the end, we decided to keep them available for sale, as our renovation project is still at the initial sketch stage!

We’re so proud to know that used our hanging lights ‘George’ for the interior of ‘Bistro Francka’ in Basel!

The swiss-based baubüro in situ has a track record of projects that make bold use of reused materials on a large scale — driven by a certain taste for technical challenges. The refurbishment of the former gatehouse on the Franck Areal site is smaller and more delicate, but nonetheless entirely consistent with the firm’s approach: the intervention on the existing building is minimal, and in addition to the lamps, the furniture is also second-hand, so are the kitchen furniture and supplies, etc. The former Pförtnerhaus is since short registered as protected heritage, so even the original window sills were preserved and covered with the tabletops. Bistro Francka is a social gastronomical initiative, employing asylum seekers. It is part of , a quite unique redevelopment project taking place on the former mustard factory of Thomi + Franck. In the future, the site will host a mixed programme dedicated to contemporary dance, housing, circular economy and community building.

The hanging lights in question were created based on aluminium downlights reclaimed from the former WTC I & II towers in Brussels, that our lighting team transformed by powder-coating them in bright color. Such a model is by definition a limited series, and the few hundred pieces we have made are long sold out. But our lighting workshop has been very active since then! Book Launch! ‘20 petites leçons d’économie de matière’ is a book written by Victor Meesters (Rotor) and Vincent Laureau, the fruit of a course on reuse and materiality taught to Master’s students in architecture at . After exploring and discussing the subject for several months, the group compiled a collection of often-overlooked concepts, practices and strategies for reducing material consumption in the construction sector.

Each chapter of the book highlights a specific type of intervention, ranging from the relocation of entire buildings to the creation of floor patterns using the opus incertum technique, as well as the application of simple principles designed to facilitate maintenance. It describes pragmatic approaches that can inspire everyday construction and design practices – a discussion basis for reconsidering the use of materials in architecture and the building sector.

To present their work, Victor Meesters and Vincent Laureau invite you to a conference-walk where each principle is put in relation to a material, process or physical part of Rotor’s site in Evere. The presentation will be in French and followed by a moment of exchange around a drink!

Are you looking for a first professional experience in the field of materials reuse? Join our team for half a year as an intern!

On average, our team always counts between 2 and 3 interns on 6-month contracts; we therefore regularly have vacancies. Internships at Rotor DC are paid, and we aim to make it a valuable and enjoyable experience, during which you will discover the ins and outs of our fascinating field of activity.

We are currently looking for an intern to join our shop team three days a week. We will start reviewing applications as soon as received. Deadline: first of June 2026.

From time to time, it’s good to look back on the materials that left our warehouse and see where they ended up. The cohousing project Milcamps (Schaerbeek) integrates quite a few of our categories, from flooring to lights and small k***s. For this newly constructed six-storey building, the architects at .la have chosen to give a central role to non-new materials in their interior design, and the developer of the project followed them in this reasoning.

In the preliminary sketches, the flooring in the shared spaces (circulation, utility room, guest room) was to be covered with new thin ceramic tiles. The project team kept looking for an alternative during the strict timing of the construction. This resulted in the installation of 700 m2 of terrazzo tiles provided by Rotor DC. These tiles of extraordinary quality were recovered from the remaining stock of the former Bomarbre/Marbralys factory in Harelbeke – the last terrazzo factory active in Belgium when it closed its doors in 2018. The project team went for a half/half mix of the lighter 'Nizza' and darker 'Torino' tones, which allowed them to have uniform zones but also a combined checkerboard pattern.

The project also contains dozens of reused hanging lights that were verified in our workshop, such as the model '1102-0144' by Ideoli. One of our in-house designs, 'Karl' also found its way into the entry hall. In the utility space, a sink in natural stone, a couple of lantern lighting and a batch of porcelain doork***s were used. And here’s the icing on the cake: the handle on the building’s main entrance door also comes from our store!

It’s a joy to see our materials given such a new purpose – congratulations to all the participants on the result!

On a sunny day in 2024, we set up a simple experiment: we used irregular granite slabs, salvaged from the floor of a 1990s-era office in Brussels, to create stepping stones in the grass in front of our cafeteria. The polished side was buried face down, so that the rough side could be used as a walking surface.

Two years later, here are a few observations on the result:
- the stone color is still very clear – the slabs age much better than concrete.
- the ‘flip-side’ surface finish remains remarkably non-slip;
- the shape of the edges is nicely blurred by the growing grass.

Good news for your garden projects: we still have some reclaimed granite slabs in stock. Those used for our stepping stones are available for just €4 each!
