I grew up on these chairs. I didn't know then that they had a name, or a story — only that they were springy and light, and nothing like the heavy chairs at other people's houses.
Marcel Breuer designed them in 1928 — one bent steel tube, no back legs, a seat of hand-woven cane. The chair only became the Cesca thirty years later, named for his daughter Francesca. Nearly a hundred years on, it still looks like the newest thing in the room.
This one is a study for a Brussels apartment — designed, not yet built. Travertine, linen, one bunch of greenery, and four chairs I've been sitting on, one way or another, my whole life. When the old piece is that good, everything else only has to keep out of its way.
Curious which old piece could anchor your home? I'd love to hear from you. 🤍
