Today we celebrated the official opening of Pachthof and the Native Flora Garden at the Meise Botanic Garden. The historic Pachthof have been reimagined as a place for meeting, dining and gathering, embedded within a renewed landscape. The new restaurant carefully weaves itself into the existing ensemble and opens onto a vibrant courtyard framed by historic façades and mature trees.

From the greenhouse complex, visitors enter the new Native Flora Garden, situated on higher ground next to the Tenant Farm and celebrates the diversity of Belgium’s indigenous plant species. A canopy walk across the restaurant roof, planted with rare native grasslands, offers panoramic views over the Botanical Garden before descending via a new spiral staircase into the courtyard.

Together, these interventions reinforce the Botanical Garden’s public role and create new ways to experience the site. The Pachthof Restaurant, rooftop walk and Native Flora Garden are now open to visitors; be sure to pay it a visit!

EXHIBITION
To Be Is To Weave
on the interweaving of life and art

Starting on Saturday, 13 June, the exhibition “To Be Is To Weave” opens its doors at Buurthuis Prinsenhof in Ghent. The exhibition presents textile artworks created at Huis Perrekes, a care continuüm in Oosterlo tailored to people living with dementia and their loved ones, with whom we have been working closely for almost ten years now. The exhibition builds on a long-standing tradition within Huis Perrekes, where art and culture are not separate activities but an integral part of everyday life.

Weaving serves here as a metaphor for connection. Just as individual threads come together to form a fabric, a community is created through encounters, care, and shared experiences. The textile works explore how people with and without dementia are part of the same social fabric. The artworks were created by residents, children, young people, volunteers, guests, staff members, family, and friends. Students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Mol also contributed to the project.

The exhibition also features the Cradle Bed, designed by NU architectuuratelier in collaboration with Huis Perrekes. The bed connects those who sleep with those who cradle or keep watch, making the final stage of life as meaningful and comfortable as possible for everyone involved. The creation of “To Be Is To Weave” was documented by filmmaker Inge Vaikla, who previously made a film about the Cradle Bed. Both short films can also be viewed during the exhibition.

Some weeks ago we visited the Kuregem station project site as part of the BMA call for proposals, for which we have been selected to participate in the competition.

The regeneration of this former station beneath railway line 28 presents a unique opportunity to reconnect this overlooked site with the Anderlecht neighbourhood. By reinterpreting and building upon its existing spatial qualities, and by opening up the site to make it more accessible, it has the potential to evolve into a meaningful place—serving as a vital link between the neighbourhood and the broader city.

The combination of infrastructure, location, and programme makes this an especially relevant and challenging design framework, and we are pleased to be part of the process.

After years of silence, a new chapter is beginning for Saint John’s Church (Sint-Janskerk) in Anzegem. Work on the choir and the tower has started, along with the consilidation of the nave ruin.

The church was severely damaged by fire in 2014. Since then, the remains of the nave have gradually been reclaimed by nature, forming a ruin with a distinct, almost dreamlike character. Our design seeks to retain and strengthen this atmosphere, while transforming the site—deeply rooted in Anzegem—into a high-quality public space that supports the village’s identity and sense of community.
The ruin and its wild garden become the foundation for an open garden room: a place for encounter and quiet reflection at the heart of the village. The open-air nave is reimagined as a blooming hortus conclusus, with a lush rose garden and a sequence of interconnected garden rooms. The intervention builds on what remains after the fire: traces, fragments, and existing structures. A new addition supports the ruin and subtly refers to the former church interior, while respecting the heritage. Within the original church walls, the interplay between inside and outside creates a variety of atmospheres. Large gates make this boundary flexible, allowing the space to adapt to different uses and seasons. It accommodates both stillness and activity, for all ages. The tower will be restored and will once again serve as a smaller liturgical space. The garden connects to this space and to the village square, re-establishing its role as a place for gathering.
