As the new academic year kicks off, we look back at last semester when FELT had the pleasure of tutoring the “Maastunnel Museum” studio at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture (RAvB).

Starting from the discovery of the striking ventilation buildings of the Maastunnel — interwar gems by Ad van der Steur — students explored their potential through scenography, axonometric reference research, and finally a reuse exercise that reimagined these technical monuments as a public museum.

A mandatory extension pushed them to reflect on broader themes such as copy, contrast, context, and heritage — sparking new perspectives on how we engage with the past in design.

A warm thank you to the students for their inspiring work, and to our co-teacher Hülya Ertas, and guest critics Ewout De Bleser and Hinke Majoor for their valuable contributions.

3/3 This single-storey home was conceived for a retired couple with the ambition to age in place, comfortably and independently. Situated on a narrow and deep plot, the house is designed as a fully accessible dwelling, offering a clear spatial logic where served and servant spaces alternate in a measured rhythm — a structure that supports both daily routines and long-term adaptability. That rhythm is made legible through a sequence of exposed CLT timber frames, giving the house a warm and tactile architectural identity.

A sleeping loft tucked above offers a playful, quiet space for visiting grandchildren, gently extending the domestic life of the couple into future generations. To the street, the house presents a modest, barn-like form — at once enigmatic and humble. Its distinctive roof, clad in copper, will develop a natural patina over time, allowing the building to register the passing of the years. Three chimney-like roof volumes mark the servant zones, each housing a supporting function or admitting light from varying orientations deep into the plan. They punctuate the silhouette and give architectural expression to the home’s inner organisation.

FELT designed this versatile workshop space for a copywriter friend. The interior combines a dynamic color scheme with a thoughtful layout.

A set of movable tables can be easily reconfigured, allowing the space to adapt to diverse needs — ranging from small-scale brainstorming sessions to large presentations.

Additionally, curtains enable the swift creation of private, enclosed areas, making the workshop perfectly suited for both focused work and collaboration.

Almost finished: Renovation of a midcentury bungalow. By adding a slender tower volume we untangle the circulation knot and bring daylight in the heart of this wonderful single family house.

AS FOUND: Experiments in Preservation focuses on the new relationship between contemporary design and heritage. The scenography by FELT utilises the existing exhibition hall as ‘found architecture’. Floor and ceiling elements are suspended to conceive a new framework in which the objects are presented.

1/3 This wedge shaped extension adds an office and library space to a classic detached single-family house.
The new elongated volume only just touches the front facade, and opens up towards the garden.
The structural frame also act as a support for two built-in bookshelves walls.
