Episode 075: Barbara Van Biervliet: Exploring the Intersection of Architecture, Sculpture, and Design
Barbara Van Biervliet is an architect and engineer from Knokke, Belgium, and co-runs the boutique studio Claerhout–Van Biervliet (CVB) with her partner, Xaveer Claerhout. Together, they create sculptural, organic architecture and bespoke interiors for high-end residential, hospitality, and office projects. She also co-owns Metamorphic Art Studio, where she makes interactive, transforming light-based artworks that blur the line between art and architecture.
In this conversation, Barbara shares the story behind Periscope House—featured in the Venice Biennale—explaining how a desire to preserve an untouched landscape inspired a sunken home with kinetic mirrors that reshape light and views. She also discusses her creative process, from 3D modeling and cinematic renderings to physical prototypes, and reflects on building a studio alongside motherhood, ambition, and raising three creative children.
