Bansko's bus station interior: the use of same materials and architectural elements inside&outside, the glass corner, the visual connection in/out through those double height windows...all those gestures create the continuity of indoor/outdoor space in this beautiful example of regional modernism.

Bansko's bus station interior: how beautiful is that plant invasion? We are not sure if it was planned to be that way or it just happened, but it's amazing. Sooner or later nature conquers architecture, sometimes with, but most of the time, without permission. Those romantic green stone&wooden stairs lead to a restaurant, unfortunately it didn't seem to be open.

Bansko's bus station: the main entrance is marked by a massive cantilever, a protagonist both in the exterior and the interior. The concrete, characteristic material for brutalism, here is entirely coated by stone and wood making it's presence only intuitive, giving the space a smoother atmosphere and also making a wink to the local traditional materials. The use of same elements, such as structural, finishes and lighting, inside and outside gives the feeling of continuity of the space. Inside, the two spots of main customer interest, the ticket office and the café, are treated by the same architectural language, wooden panelling, making it easier to find each one of them in the spacious hall. Luckily, the interior, such as the exterior, is very well conserved and still emits the message of what ones was an important public building and valuable example of regional modernism.

Bansko's bus station: where brutalist structure meets local traditions, presented by modular wooden carpentry and stone plinth in this modern interpretation. Both the exterior and interior are very well conserved, a rare event in our country since socialist heritage is still not very highly evaluated and from there not conserved at all. There are some exceptions such as few PVC doors, one of them you can see in the photo, at least the exterior ones have this wooden flapper folio, not the best, but neither the worst. Unfortunately the interior couldn't escape the white PVC doors.

The project of Bansko's bus station was made by two local architects - arch. Yanchovichin and arch. Dautev - for it's main purpose to meet the modern necessities of the growing town. The first phase of the project, the design, was made in 1976 by arch. Yanchovichin, later in 1980 it was developed to the end by arch. Dautev in collaboration with arch. Paraskov. 🙏 Thanks to for the historical research.

Bansko's bus station. It's been a while since we've noticed that outstanding building, but it was just recently that we had the opportunity to take a closer look: 1st thing that catches the eye is the perfect scale of this free standing building and this perfectly clear public function. Second, the amazing and very well balanced fusion between, on one hand, the brutalism with that exaggerated roof, visible structural elements, separated from the main volume and also present on the facade. On the other hand, the interpretation of the traditional architecture of Bansko, represented in the main volume by the stone plinth and walls, the wooden carpentry and other wooden elements such as "chardak", typical open wooden terrace that guides to the second floor of the traditional houses. All those details guide us to the conclusion that what we have here is a valuable example of regional modernism. 🙏 Thanks to for the only interesting and informative article, we found so far regarding the building. We'll share some historical info in the next posts.
