The spirit of a city is grounded in the character of its public spaces. The intangible function of giving a community cohesion only occurs in spaces where the population can gather and recognize itself as a whole. This project seeks to rebuild the sense of public space of Jiráskovo Square, which disappeared due to urban changes in the last century.
In this proposal, the new library and the square form an inseparable unit. The new building is simply a part of the square that is covered by a bioclimatic umbrella. To achieve this, the plot designated for the library is unified with the one intended for the square by relocating the street that once separated them. The same cobblestone paving that covers the square continues into the library’s interior and extends to its terraces. In this way, the square gains an unexpected scale and density of activities. The new square complements Karlovo Square, creating a dialogue and balance between both banks of the Elbe river.
Public Infrastructure
The new building functions as a service infrastructure for the square, enabling exceptional events to happen there. The terraces form a grandstand overlooking the city. The large roof can support lighting, decorations, screens, and sound equipment for various events. The placement of the music room, art gallery, café, commercial spaces, large reading room, and meeting hall provides activities around the clock. The square is enriched with meaning and possibilities by hosting the library. In turn, the library becomes more inviting and open by being part of the square.
