It is said that at the age of 41, the Buddha ascended to Sumchutsasum, where his mother had been reborn, to preach the Dharma and liberate his mother. His disciples on Earth prayed for the Buddha to return, and after a long debate, the Buddha accepted to do so.

Lhabab Dhuechen or Descending Day of Lord Buddha commemorates the return of the Buddha to the Earth.

This day is one of the most auspicious days in the Bhutanese calendar and it is believed that any virtuous actions or negative actions performed on this day are multiplied by several million times.

It is also celebrated nationwide as Mother's Day in Bhutan.
