Oh boy.
I sure hope you haven't planted out your tomatoes and other delicate seedlings that haven't had chance yet to grab proper root in the ground. If they survive the gusts, they'll definitely be stunted trying to recover.

We're in for another season of gardening Olympics, folks.

My personal seedlings are purposefully weeks behind where they normally are. I've been working hard on getting my tomatoes potted on this week for the second time, when normally they're in their final container by now (they typically get repotted 3-4 times in my process - it’s all about the roots!). I have learned over the years to watch the signs of the seasons we are in. In watching nature all around me, I just knew that everything is way behind and we're not over the cold part yet. This is why I was encouraging everyone to wait until the first week of April to start your tomatoes. And if you did, you're probably like me and glad because you don't have an already 3+ foot plant to contend with for another 3+ weeks before it'll be "safe" to keep them out. It's a lot of work moving big plants around, that in end, take a while to stabilize when planted out and end up more on the stunted side, in my experience.

Cool weather crops are safe to plant out. Onions, brassicas, lettuce, spinach, garlic, peas, potatoes, beets - those can all be seeded and planted now.

Hold off on carrots, beans, cucumbers, squash, corn, direct sow herbs like dill. The soil and weather are too cold yet, you'll be reseeding due to poor/no germination.

And keep your heat loving seedlings in - actually, all my seedlings but onions are still in my greenhouse. Tomatoes, peppers, celery, herbs etc - keep them inside, or in your greenhouse for now. No problem to let them start experiencing the great outdoors to start hardening off and enjoy gentle breezes, but make sure that they're still portable so they're not experiencing 80-100 km/hr gusts 😂

Do a once over your yard tonight and anything you've put out like patio furniture cushions, wind chimes, watering cans etc that isn't nailed down - consider moving in or securing to prevent damage.

What spring garden chores are you working on?

Here is my list:
* I have 3 utility truck dump trucks full of mulch that I need to start pitching and placing in my walkways of my last years expansion garden.
* I am not quite ready to take down the dead plant matter from last season as I can see there are still insects waking up, but that will be soon. I leave my sunflowers, bean plants etc. to decay over the winter. It adds nutrients back to the soil and provides shelter for beneficial insects (ie: my unpaid but much appreciated employees) to slumber in the winter before waking up soon.
* I am though going to be planting the following crops in the next few days:
Onions, Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Onion sets, Soft Neck Garlic, Beets, Lettuce, Peas
I am holding off on carrots a little while longer, the soil is still rather cool and they need warm soil, sun and moisture to germinate well. I will also need to first harden off my onion, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower seedlings.
* I am working on moving some seedlings that are in my house into the greenhouse this week - its still chilly but looks like we're past the negatives overnight. An oil heater will still be needed for overnights.
* I kid you not, I am on my 6th garden plan and I feel there's still one more iteration to come before I feel confident. Proper planning is crucial!

As our market season is done for the year, and I am in Edmonton less these days, I am looking to take on 3-4 customers local to WEE area for either Bi Weekly or Monthly eggs subscriptions of 3-4 dozen a pick up. 🥚

What does this look like?

* I am looking for customers who are reliable and available to pick up eggs from either a drop spot in Evansburg or a meet up in Entwistle (at a specific time - either a morning or afternoon). I do not allow on farm pick ups for bio security reasons.
* I am looking for customers who can utilize 3-4 dozen eggs either bi monthly or monthly, at less than grocery store prices.
* I am looking to establish a schedule with this customer that provides us both with a routine, but also flexibility for things like summer holidays etc. when pauses in service may be needed.
* I request cartons be returned/left at pick ups so they can be reused.

If this is something you're interested in, please send me a PM and lets see if we can set something up. 💚

What an incredible way to end our market season!

To my family that has been such a help and support this season, thank you my loves; we did it!

To all our customers, thank you for your support. Thank you for helping make a dream and vision come to life. We have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves this season and look forward to planning for the next already.

We have a few more orders to get matched up to customers. We will figure that out in the next few days.

We are of course still shipping out orders for as long as you need us. 💚

I’ll be heading into the garden soon and cannot wait to start putting my hands back in the soil to get some of our cool weather crops on their way.

I am still around, I’ll be finally getting to my emails this week, I’ll be posting here and there. Just shifting gears to this next part of the season, my favourite; seed farming! 🌱

May your gardens be blessed,
May your hands be strong.

Grow extra, every which way you can.

Thank you once again,
Jess
