Today's backyard harvest!

Pickling and slicing cucumbers, cherry and slicing tomatoes, kale, basil, oregano, calendula, and eggs. We produced all of this in our backyard, right in the middle of town! We have enough herbs for the winter, and will use the calendula for oils and lotions.

Does anyone elses kale reeaally like the cooler days? Ours is looking it's best yet!

We went camping this past weekend with the whole family. We did the Spruce Bog Boardwalk trail and stopped for a picture in the bog. Behind me is a mad mess of sweet gale (Myrica gale) and Labrador tea (Ledum groenlandicum). Sweet gale is used traditionally as a diuretic and to treat skin conditions. The thick shrub provides nesting for birds and is a host plant for a variety of moths. Labrador tea is used traditionally in cases of cough and chest congestion. Leaves and twigs are eaten by moose. It was a beautiful place for a morning walk.

Chamomile is an easy to grow addition to the herb garden. Traditionally, chamomile has been used to treat skin irritations and for it's calming effect on an anxious mind.

Growing, harvesting, and drinking a tea from the flowers all create a soothing effect and justify making room for this plant in your garden. 🌼

Ecological landscape design refers to the use of ecological principles in a garden design. The environment is taken into consideration - wildlife, soil, water, local plants - when designing a landscape. 🌄Human aspects are also taken into consideration such as aesthetics and desires or goals for the garden (e.g. food production). 🍓
By intertwining the human desires and ecological components, a design can bring harmony to a landscape. For example, humans and wildlife both need food. Why not plant a native shrub that provides blooms for pollinators, and later on provides berries for birds and humans? 🐝🐦 💁

This beautiful plant is butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa). Check out the bright orange flowers!

Butterfly milkweed is native to eastern and southwestern North America. The plant likes full sun and dry soil, making it a perfect choice for this hot and dry front yard garden. The larval stage of the monarch butterfly is supported by this plant, and the nectar attracts many bee, wasp, and fly pollinators.
