These four trays were planted three weeks ago. They’re flowers that either take many months to come to maturity or can go out before the last frost because they can handle a bit of cool weather.
They grainy looking stuff on top of some of them is called vermiculite. It helps retain moisture and that way the seedlings don’t dry out quickly.

Feverfew
Snapdragons
Eucalyptus (which is being very difficult and only has two tiny sprouts)

I’m trying winter sowing for the first time! This seemed like a very easy and interesting way to grow some of my seeds. ❄️ 🌱

Here’s what I did:
1. Saved some empty juice / water jugs and made some drainage holes in the bottom and cut the top off of them.
2. Filled them with potting soil and planted seeds that need cold stratification or cold hardy annuals.
3. Then I duct taped the top back on and threw out the cap out because you don’t use it when winter sowing.
4. Finally I put them outside in the snow where they will stay for months until they start growing on their own in the spring.

That’s it! They require little to no maintenance out in their jugs. I can’t wait to see how they turn out.

Has anyone tried this method?

We prepped a new garden bed today! It was nice to finally have a day where it wasn’t windy and raining.
We first did a layer of cardboard followed by a layer of old yard waste bags that were forgotten outside to surpress future w**ds. Then we watered it down so it wouldnt move around as much while we added everything else to the bed. I added some hay from old bales I had beforere putting in the soil.
You can also add logs, sticks, dried leaves, grass clippings etc. this is a great way to save on soil and over many years it will all start to break down and enrich the soil. 😊 🌱

I started some seeds a few weeks ago, which you may think is early but this is why. The boxelder bugs are back and destroyed all but one of my beefsteak tomatoes. 😠
The bugs are a problem on our entire street. We’ve already had someone come out and spray but now with the snow and freezing rain I feel like they may need to do another spray.
I replanted all 35+ of the different seedlings that the bugs attacked. 😞 I also put up a variety of bug traps so hopefully it doesn’t get this bad.

Seeing this little allium peeking up made me smile. I’ve been dealing with a lot of grief recently and this was a nice surprise. It’s a sign of spring and new beginnings.☀️

📐 Measuring tape
🧴 Wood sealant (optional for outdoor durability)
🌱 Potting soil & herb plants
🧤 Gardening gloves

Step 2: Create the Planter Boxes
Cut and assemble four planter boxes to fit the frame.
Drill small drainage holes at the bottom of each box to prevent waterlogging.
Step 3: Attach the Planters to the Frame
Secure each box to the frame, leaving enough space for plant growth and easy access.

Fill each planter with high-quality potting soil, ensuring good drainage and nutrients for your herbs.
Step 5: Plant Your Herbs
Choose your favorite herbs like rosemary, oregano, basil, and thyme. Gently plant them in the soil, leaving space between each plant to grow.
