Today, after much preparation, we have officially begun tiling the two upstairs units.

Quick recap: First, we used floor levelling compound to fill in any low spots over the plywood subfloor, helping to create a flat surface to tile on. We then installed Schluter-Ditra, a special “uncoupling“ membrane, that separates the tiles from the subfloor, preventing any future cracking. And finally… we started laying the tile!

Pro tip: Preparation is often the most important and overlooked step in any renovation project, big or small. It not only helps the rest of the project run smoothly, but also helps to create that beautiful finished product you can be proud of! 🏡🔥

A little update from project Penetang…

We are currently working on one of the upstairs kitchens, and have to mention, the jointery found on some of these cabinets is incredible ✅

Dovetail joints, shown below, are the strongest of all joints. Additionally, as there is no need for fasteners with this technique, the finished product is beautiful.

Today the team wrapped up a new entranceway in beautiful Collingwood, Ontario!

As per Ontario Building Code requirements, we’ve installed a peep hole 👀 in the center of the door, as well as self closing hinges to assist the door in shutting, if ever left open.

At the end of the day, a very clean and functional new entrance to a basement appartment. 🏡

Another egress window completed by the Family at Innovative Home Improvements! 🏡 This brand new basement window will allow for much more light into this bedroom! To make this particular one unique, the two sons Ryan and Chris custom built a pressure treated 4x4 window well, notching each individual run, to allow for a sturdy finished product! 💪

***Quick tip: If you avoid this extremely important step, you may find that over time the horizontal load from the soil will put pressure on the sides of the well, eventually caving them in towards the window. Additionally, as was done on this project, add 6 inches of clear crushed gravel behind the well walls to allow for proper drainage!
