Part of the fun of a new design project is collecting the ingredients. This time for a pollinator paradise 🐝 🦋 🐞

It's not possible to find all the native plants we need at the local garden centres but our native plant suppliers always come through for us. This time we will lean on them for Pearly Everlasting, Narrow Leaf Vervain, Blue-Eyed Grass, Little Bluestem, and Moss Phlox

'But I have to clean my garden or the bulbs won't come up'

We hear this all the time but it's not true. Have faith! Bulbs will come up even through heavy leaf litter and debris. In fact, the leaves keep them sheltered, cool and moist even on hot spring days, prolonging the blooms.

28 C last week and 0 C today...happens every Spring...for a garden teeming with life we need to leave debris to support those lives in cold temps...I promise this garden will be glorious without ever having a 'clean up'

Repost from

Our gardening team conscientiously leaves the leaves and relies on them to insulate perennials, build a healthy soil profile, help with water retention, feed next years plants, and support wildlife. Our biggest challenge at this time of year are the lawn companies who suddenly appear and blow the gardens bare 🤬🤬🤬

Teeny text tips at this time of year to everyone we know whose garden we have worked on in the past.

Don't do what your neighbours do. Let's set a new example for others to follow!

Would you believe we encountered a gardening company last week that was already clear-cutting perennials in September!?...some sort of super-early Fall Cleanup. Early yes, but also an outdated gardening practice which should be a thing of the past.

And so it seems we need to get our signs out earlier than anticipated if we want to have any hope of changing gardening habits and creating better land stewards.

Maybe someone will see one of our signs, ponder our message, search the web for more info, realize how much our local wildlife are struggling, maybe even discover Doug Tallamy, and start taking a gentler approach to Fall gardening 🤞🏻

Shrink The Lawn
..or get rid of it altogether

Biodiversity is important!

A garden full of native plants (and some introduced non-invasive plants) is so much better than monocultures like the lawns carpeting our suburbs.

Pictured - we gradually shrank the lawn at this home over the course of a few years until there was no more lawn. Sorry lawn guy/gal. Put that gas-powered mower away and don't you dare use a blower on this.
