The beginning of the Sherose Island Blooms 2026 flower season is almost here! 🌷

In the coming days I’ll be posting some tulip sales, and I can’t wait to keep sharing locally grown flowers with so many wonderful people in our community.

Nothing sweeter than seeing the next generation stopping to smell the flowers already. Thank you for all the support each season! 💐

Seed starting update: I had to dispose of all 1,500 seedlings due to fungus gnats.
I was able to restart most varieties since I had backup seed (only needed to buy snapdragons again). Plants will be later and numbers will be lower, but there will still be flowers.
Lesson learned — fresh soil only for seed starting.

Lesson learned the hard way this year… always use fresh soil for seed starting.
I lost a lot of seedlings to fungus gnats after using some stored soil from last year. Some trays were a total loss, which honestly was heartbreaking after all the hours put in. But that's part of growing I guess, you learn as you go.
Round two is now underway with fresh mix, sticky traps, and a fan running. Hoping for better luck this time.
If you're starting seeds right now… learn from me: fresh soil is worth it.

Winter sowing is one of the most efficient ways to start plants.
It doesn’t take up space under grow lights in the house, and it’s a great way to start perennials, cold-hardy annuals, and even some vegetables.
Here at Sherose Island Blooms, this is how I like to start many of my perennials, some cold-hardy annuals, and a few of our vegetables.

First soil blocks of the year. 🌱

Snowed overnight and another storm coming, but spring isn't far away.

Over a thousand Snapdragon seeds are being started today, the first of the season! 🙂 Feels good to be back at it. Snow’s keeping the soil and wells happy, and soon it’ll all turn green again. The 2026 flower season is starting.

Have you heard any rumblings yet about what is going on with the Barrington Farmers’ Market?

If you’ve been along for the ride with us, you know we relocated the market for the last two weeks in the fall, because we’d already cancelled three markets due to lack of shelter.
Thanks to a very generous offer from the staff (shoutout to Laura!) at FRA we were able to finish our season at their location, and it was extremely well received.

At this time we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be at Forest Ridge Academy every Saturday for the 2026 season, with the first market on Saturday May 23rd.

When we say we’re grateful for this collaboration it is an understatement.
Having access to a safe outdoor space to operate the market in a clean & cozy location, with the option of moving indoors during inclement weather takes so much stress off all involved.
No more dodging baseballs or vendor tents!
And barring a hurricane or other craziness no more cancelled markets!!!

😃 😃 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃

We are confident that this location will entice additional vendors to join us, as there is lots of space to share (if you’re interested please message us for a vendor application).

We are also confident the site’s vibe will attract new customers in addition to our valued regulars.

But that’s not all folks!

Thanks to some great advice we approached the Municipality of Barrington and asked them to collaborate with us to build the Barrington Farmers Market its very own structure and they agreed!
We are so excited about this we’re bouncing, we wish you could see it 🤣

Next week the BFM Executive Board Members will be presented with a Memorandum of Understanding that will outline all the details of this arrangement, and you’ll receive an update on more details once confirmed.

In the meantime there are some juicy details in the attached document of the process, and you can watch a video of the last Council Meeting posted on the Municipality’s website for all the goods.
We thank all the Council members who are making this possible.

The Barrington Farmers Market will do its own fundraising for this project through many avenues, which means we need this project to be as cost efficient as possible, because we are a nonprofit organization without a big bank account to back us up.

If you or anyone you know is a quality tradesperson or company, construction supply company, or similar who’d be interested in supporting this project with their services or supplies we’d love to hear from you.

We’re still a long way off from starting construction, but securing the Forest Ridge Academy as our interim site for 2026 gives us time to plan and get our ducks 🦆 🦆 🦆 in a row. Many thanks to those at FRA and Misty James for making this possible.

Once the new structure is built this will be a huge milestone for our Farmers Market, and it’s amazing knowing we have the support from our community and especially the Municipality of Barrington.
Since its inception almost 9 years ago the Barrington Farmers Market and the Municipality have worked together, and this project is the culmination of that relationship.

The completion of this project will have far reaching benefits for the whole community for many years in the future.

We hope you’ll follow along to see how we progress.
We’ll keep you posted. 🙏

Year two has come to an end and it sure wasn’t an easy one — cold spring, drought, and even deer eating my mint! 😅 But the flowers that made it were beautiful, and the people who supported me were even better. 💐

Thank you to everyone who bought bouquets, shared kind words, and even dropped off or returned mason jars — it means the world. 💕 Here’s to more rain, fewer deer nibbles, and lots more blooms next year! 🌸🌿
