The “Prop Halo”

The Oak Bay Marine Group used the Prop Halo at the MV Salmon Seeker located in Kano Inlet, Haida Gwaii from 2006 – 2011. We used the Prop Halo on our 16 Boston Whaler Outrages that were run from dawn to dusk all summer long. This product has been amazing as it has probably saved us 6 – 12 skegs per year at a cost of $500 each and a week of downtime. Since the addition of the Prop Halo we have not had one broken skeg.
Not only does the Prop Halo save us money and downtime, it provides less drag in the water which saves fuel. There are also no sharp edges that could potentially cut your line when you have hooked that Chinook of a lifetime.
Not only would I use the Prop Halo on my own boat, I would recommend the Prop Halo to any of our customers at all of our operations.

I have designed a new prop guard, or what I have trademarked as the "Prop Halo", and replaced every prop guard on every tender. Oak Bay was having problems with breakage of the skegs and the cavitation plates with the band style guards, so I designed the new guard using round bar. Following is a testimony from Steve Sinclair at OBMG regarding the Prop Halo. Another common complaint of the band style prop guard is the catching of water in the band forcing the water back into the boat and swamping it. The Prop Halo has solved this problem.

When up North on a fishing charter with OBMG the small tenders are used for fishing. One year, during the off season, I was contracted to paint 18 of the tenders giving them the overhaul they needed. From 2002 until 2014 my main contract work was for Oak Bay Marine Group at the Northern Resorts, Quadra Island. I did the maintenance of all structural, some mechanical, and a large portion of the plumbing of the 175 foot MV Salmon Seeker, the 125 foot MV Charlotte Princess, and the 126 foot MV Marabell. The ships were used for West Coast fishing charters near Langara. Eventually two of them were docked and then sold, leaving only the Charlotte Princess in service. In 2014 the Charlotte Princess too was taken out of service.

One project I had was to build a viewing platform out of scaffolding to be erected over the river up at Knight Inlet so that the Disney film crew could film the bears at the river for their upcoming movie. I built this on my property and it was picked up in 4 different sections and flown by helicopter to Knight Inlet. I then flew up to assemble it amongst the curious onlookers of bear cubs.

In 2002 I went back into Boat Building and Repairs doing contract work for both Knight Inlet and Oak Bay Marine Group. Through the years I repaired and maintained small boats for Knight Inlet Lodge as well as built an open barge passenger and sight-seeing vessel. In 2013 and 2014 when Knight Inlet was rebuilding after a devastating fire had burned the lodge, I helped with several projects, one of them being a 50 foot floating boat house with a 35 foot hydro lift for repairing boats.

For about 1 year '92 - '93 I worked for Daigle Welding & Marine Ltd. building aluminum boats. A shoulder injury (I slipped off a 6 ft. cliff) brought boat building to a screeching halt and I bought the Bugeye's Video store in '94 which sold in 2008, We expanded the store and later incorporated gifts and flowers into the store to compliment the videos.

In the early 90's I moved to the Black Creek and worked as an Engineer for Marine Link Transportation Ltd. in Campbell River in charge of maintenance and refit. At that time the company had 1 - 100ft landing craft, 1 - 70ft landing craft, & 1 - 50ft landing craft plus the ground support equipment.
