DO YOUR EAVESTROUGH BEFORE YOU DO A METAL ROOF!
Just today I had a customer call me saying "I just had a metal roof installed. I need a quote for new eavestrough."
My reply to him was that we do not install eavestrough on homes with metal roofs. There are few reasons for this..
1. New metal roof comes with flashing that makes eavestrough work difficult. It covers top end of existing eavestrough and also it makes it difficult to create proper slopes when new eavestrough is installed. Metal flashing often needs to be cut to enable for eavestrough to be lifted high enough to create a slope.
2. Walking on metal roofs is much more unsafe than walking on shingle roofs. There is also more potential to dent / damage metal roof.
3. K style gutters / eavestrough are not strong enough to handle all melting snow and ice coming down from metal roofs. For this reason we are unable to provide warranty. If someone does install k style gutters on a metal roof, smart thing to do would be to add more brackets than usual. It would be good to put brackets at every foot and a half as opposed to regular two feet spacing. This would give eavestrough a bit more strength and a fighting chance against all the ice metal roof feeds into gutters.
In summary, do your eavestrough before you install a metal roof and make sure it is installed with many hanger brackets.
We used to quote eavestrough installations on homes with metal roofs and we would add additional thousand or two on average for additional time, labour, brackets and risk. When all these things are considered, we could not be competitive with price. In the end, we just stopped quoting eavestrough work on metal roofs.
