As we celebrate Earth Day, every day becomes an opportunity to nurture our connection with nature, finding strength and inspiration in the resilience of the trees that surround us, from the team at Aspen Tree Care.

The gray-green patches spreading across your tree bark aren't a disease. They're not killing the tree. They're not even feeding on it.

That's lichen — a partnership between an alga and a fungus that uses bark as a surface, the way a billboard uses a wall. The lichen doesn't pe*****te the bark, doesn't steal nutrients, and doesn't weaken the tree. It just needs something solid to grow on.

If anything, lichen is a sign your air is clean. Lichens are extremely sensitive to air pollution — they absorb everything directly from the atmosphere with no roots to filter through. Heavy lichen growth on your trees means the air quality in your neighborhood is good enough to support organisms that can't tolerate sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, or particulate matter.

Your tree is healthier than the one in the subdivision where the bark is bare.

Lichens also host a micro-ecosystem. Tiny insects, mites, and spiders live in the lichen layer. Birds — especially warblers and nuthatches — pick through it for food. Some hummingbirds use lichen fragments to camouflage their nests.

🌿 If your trees have lichen:

- Leave it alone — it's beneficial and indicates clean air
- Scraping it off damages bark and removes a food source for birds
- Heavy lichen growth ≠ sick tree. It means the opposite.

The tree you thought was sick is wearing a certificate of good health. 🌱

Over the past few days, Aspen Tree Care removed an oak tree that was overhanging the client’s fence and extending onto the neighbour’s property.

It is not often that two separate companies in the same industry collaborate to complete a job safely and effectively. This demonstrates the potential for growth and appreciation within the community.

We were honoured to collaborate on this project with one of the leading arborist companies on the south shore. We extend our gratitude to ampedpropertyservices and owner landonrussell for their exceptional work and the opportunity to share our expertise.

We appreciate your support and look forward to working on further projects together.

Last weekend, Aspen Tree Care assisted a valued client by removing nine white pine trees.

These trees posed a problem as they obstructed the client’s septic field bed and pool, causing their pool to flood with pine needles. The cleanup process was challenging.

Since the trees have been removed, the client’s septic field bed is secure and the pool is expected to be ready for use shortly.

Major Storm Inbound

When snow and ice accumulate, branches and trees can break due to excessive weight, potentially affecting your home or property.

At Aspen Tree Care, we are dedicated to providing your home and property with the highest level of care. With nearly a decade of experience, we are certified by the Forestry Society of Nova Scotia in tree felling and safety, and we have undergone additional training. Furthermore, we have spent years climbing trees, setting up ropes and slings in challenging locations, employing 3:1 systems and mechanical aids such as lifts and cranes.

This experience enables us to handle any tree we encounter and identify a safe and effective solution to any problem.

Given the numerous companies available, some may not disclose their true education, training, or credentials due to limited experience and a desire to generate revenue quickly. However, tree work is a serious profession. Anyone can purchase a saw and a rope, which is why we recommend obtaining multiple quotes for your project or services to ensure you hire the appropriate individuals with the necessary training. This approach allows you to avoid underqualified individuals who may inadvertently damage your property or home.

With our comprehensive hands-on experience and training, Aspen Tree Care is the ideal team for any job.
